Mary woke up after a long nap, feeling relaxed. Peter hd been right–the lavender oil had helped soothe her. Perhaps it was the change of environment, or maybe it was having Catherine and Peter close by. She knew she had to be strong and recover quickly so she could see her grandfather again. Whatever the reason, she had slept like a baby. 

“Mary… can I come in?” Peter’s voice called from outsle the door. 

“Of course! Come in!” she replied, her volce still drowsy. 

“How’s the most beautiful woman in this house doing today?” Peter teased as he entered. 

“Peter, stop flattering her and come in already. Mary must be starving,” Catherine chimed in from behind him. 

“Oh, Grandma, don’t be jealous. Mary’s the second most beautiful woman in this house,” Peter joked as he set down a tray with a delicious breakfast. 

“Wow! This smells amazing. These are my favorite foods!” Mary exclaimed, her eyes wide with delight. 

“I told you I’d take care of you and help you recover. And the first step is to make sure you’re well–fed and happy.” 

“Peter 

got up early to prepare your breakfast,” Catherine added. “He didn’t let me touch a thing until he brought it to you, so now we can all enjoy breakfast together.” 

Leopold, the butler, appeared with a pot of coffee and cups for the three of them. For that moment, they seemed like a family–husband, wife, and mother–in–law. The atmosphere was light and cheerful as they laughed over stories from their time in Galea, more than three years ago. Peter always had a way of making Catherine and Mary laugh. The contrast between him and Maximus was stark–almost abysmal “Mrs. Catherine, your grandson is on the phone,” Leopold announced seriously. 

Catherine’s smile faded as she rose from the table. “Alright, children, continue eating. Peter, make sure this girl eats everything on her plate,” she instructed as she left the room. 

When Catherine answered the phone, her expression Hardened. “My dear Maximus, why are you only calling now? I thought that stubborn heart of yours might have started worrying about your wife by now. 

“Are you with Mary?” Maximus’s voice was tense. 

“We were just having breakfast, but I left her with Peter. He’s making sure she eats everything he made for her.” 

Maximus’s blood began to boil at the mention of his brother. Jealousy surged through him, imagining Peter gaining favor with both Catherine and Mary, especially now that his marriage was hanging by a thread. 

“I’ve looked into what you said, Grandma,” Maximus said, his voice laced with regret. 

“So, you didn’t believe me?” she responded, her voice icy.

“I needed to be sure.” 

“And now? What do you want me to do, Maximus? What’s done is done. We’re just trying to fix the mess you made.” 

“I know, Grandma. You don’t have to keep reminding me. I just wanted to let you know that, as of today, Alexia Levett is no longer with the company.” 

“Well, it’s about time,” Catherine replied sharply. “Do whatever you need to, but remember–Mary’s decision is the one I will respect. If she chooses to distance herself from you, I won’t stand in her way. In fact, I’ve already spoken with the family lawyer to explore the possibility of an amicable divorce.” 

“Grandma! You can’t decide that!” Maximus shouted, his frustration bubbling over. 

“Maximus, there’s no need to yell. I can still hear just ne,” she retorted calmly. “Think about it. Take a day to reflect on what you’ve done to Mary over the last three years. Do you honestly believe she could still accept you after everything? I will stand by whatever decision she makes, and if you try to force her into anything, I’ll be the first to intervene. Remember, beauty doesn’t flourish in hell, and as far as I know, Mary lived in hell with you. You took advantage of her because she had no one close to protect her. But let me remind you–she’s my responsibility now. trusted you once, but I won’t do it again. 

Maximus fell silent, absorbing the weight of his grandmother’s words. He realized that winning back Mary’s trust would be more difficult than he had anticipated. The trust between him and Catherine was gone, and his wife likely wanted nothing to do with him anymore. 

“Maximus, are you still there?” Catherine’s voice broke through the silence. 

“Yes, I’m here.” 

“Good. Think carefully about what I’ve said. Don’t do anything foolish. And when you’re ready to visit your wife, you’re welcome to, but only if she wants to see you. I won’t stand in your way.” 

Catherine ended the call, her heart heavy with the knowledge that her grandson was suffering the consequences of his own poor decisions. But this time, she couldn’t coddle him like when he was a child. This time, he had caused real harm to someone else. It wasn’t just a matter of helping him up after a fall -he had inflicted pain, both physical and emotional, on another human being. 

Back at the Palmer Group office, Maximus sat behind his desk, trying to focus on his work. But his. grandmother’s words kept echoing in his mind. 

“Beauty doesn’t flourish in hell,” he muttered to himself, “Grandma, your sayings… I know I hurt Mary, but I also know she loves me. And if I don’t accept the divorce, she’ll never leave me.” 

The day flew by, and before Maximus knew it, darkness had settled over the city. He felt an overwhelming need to return home, though he wasn’t sure if it was to find solace or to escape growing torment inside him.
