“Still, I owe you my thanks,” Andrew Lane said. “Where are you staying? I’ll have someone bring you a change of clothes.”
Tristan Davis’s expression turned frosty, his eyes hardening with suspicion.
Emily Blair took a sip of her latte and shook her head. “No need. My flight leaves in an hour and a half, so I’ll be heading out soon.”
Andrew Lane looked like he wanted to say more but kept his mouth shut.
Tristan wrapped an arm firmly around Emily’s shoulders. “Alright, that’s enough catching up for today. Mr. Lane, if you’ll excuse us, we’ll be on our way.”
He leaned in close, lowering his voice to a warning whisper right by Emily’s ear. “Let’s go.”
Emily barely had time to react before Tristan all but dragged her away.
Meanwhile, in the car, Isabella Austin’s mother was softly comforting Dennis Lane. “It’s alright, sweetheart. Grandma and Grandpa are both here, no one’s going to hurt you. Don’t cry, darling.”
Dennis buried his face, sobbing in fits and starts, pulling at Isabella’s mother’s heartstrings until she felt she might break.
She tried a few more soothing words, only for Dennis to wail even louder.
Frowning in distress, Isabella’s mother finally turned to vent to her husband.
“What is wrong with Andrew today? All this fuss over Emily Blair, and now he’s taking it out on his own son? Has he lost his mind? That’s not how a father should act.”
Isabella’s father, though sympathetic to Dennis and not exactly thrilled with the way Andrew and Emily had cornered him, kept a level head.
“Still, Emily did save Dennis. Andrew didn’t even thank her, and to make matters worse, he accused her of something. He really should apologize.”
His wife shot him an annoyed look. “Whose side are you on?”
He cleared his throat awkwardly. “I’m just saying Andrew’s attitude was out of line. He shouldn’t have spoken to Dennis that way.”
“Exactly,” she muttered, lowering her voice, “and don’t get me started on Emily Blair. Always scheming behind Isabella’s back, pulling those cheap tricks of hers. Now Isabella’s gone, and Andrew’s still defending Emily? What’s going on in his head? If Isabella knew, she’d be heartbroken.”
Her husband nodded in agreement, and after a pause, she added hesitantly, “Even back when Isabella was still here, Andrew and Emily’s relationship was always... murky. One of Isabella’s friends told me Emily tried to seduce Andrew more than once. And the thing is—Andrew never really pushed her away. They say there’s some unresolved history between them.”
