When Tristan Davis made it clear he truly wasn’t interested, Tanner Miller could only drop the idea with a shrug.
“All right, all right. But hey, miss this chance and you won’t get another.”
Tristan replied, “Take it back.”
Tanner pocketed the key card and slung an arm around Tristan’s shoulder. “Didn’t peg you for such a gentleman, man. I’m impressed.”
Tristan brushed off Tanner’s arm, shaking his head. “Go get your birthday party in order before you run out of time. Didn’t you say you finally invited that girl you like? You should probably put in some extra effort tonight.”
Tanner’s eyes lit up. “Absolutely! I’ll introduce you later—she’s really something special.”
Tristan opened his suitcase, grinning. “Fine, then. I’ll be waiting.”
After Tanner left, Emily Blair showed up at Tristan’s room with her things in tow.
Tristan was still unpacking when Emily spotted a glint of something on the wine-red carpet. She bent down and picked up a key card—her own room key.
She looked up, a puzzled expression on her face. “Tristan, why do you have my room key in here?”
Tristan glanced over and paused, his expression freezing for a split second. With his understanding of Tanner, it wasn’t hard to guess that Tanner had left it there on purpose.
He cursed Tanner’s stupidity silently.
“Probably Tanner’s mistake. He must’ve dropped it by accident. You should hang on to it.”
Emily, oblivious, just nodded. “Okay.”
Once his suitcase was closed, Tristan asked, “Are you hungry?”
Emily nodded eagerly. “That’s why I came to find you. Your friend mentioned the hotel’s offering a free lunch.”
Tristan grabbed his phone. “Let’s go, then.”
Tanner’s birthday bash was being held upstairs, in the ballroom of the family’s hotel—just above Tristan and Emily’s rooms.
