Tristan Davis kept things vague, his words clipped and to the point. “Family dinner,” he said.
Then, without warning, he turned the tables on Emily Blair. “What about you? Why were you at that restaurant? And why did you meet with Albert Rivera?”
Emily glanced back, clearing her throat. “Just friends. I had a few work questions for him, that’s all.”
In truth, even Emily wasn’t sure why she was lying.
Tristan didn’t let up. “What questions?”
She hesitated. “...Just some small things. Nothing important.”
He studied her profile, then said flatly, “Small things? Is there really any problem you can’t handle?”
Emily broke into a laugh. “Wow, you really think I’m that capable? Of course there are things I can’t figure out.”
Tristan stared at her for a long moment before speaking softly. “Somehow, I don’t believe you.”
Emily pulled a face, feigning helplessness. “Seriously, it was nothing. What are you imagining?”
He watched her carefully, as if searching for a crack in her story. When he found none, he finally looked away, his voice dropping. “Actually, my family set me up on a blind date today.”
He lifted his gaze to catch her reaction.
Emily’s eyes flickered, but her face held none of the expression he’d hoped for. “Oh? Did you hit it off?” she asked, her tone breezy, as if she were just fishing for gossip rather than caring at all.
Disappointment flickered across Tristan’s face as he leaned back, his voice edged with frustration. “No.”
A realization was dawning on Emily now.
Tristan and Cynthia Rivera had grown up together; their families were close, and anyone could see they’d make the perfect match. Emily didn’t need to think twice to know their parents would want to pair them up.
