Emily Blair told Elizabeth Wilson about the arrangement she’d made with Albert Rivera.
Elizabeth let out a huge sigh of relief. “Oh, is that all? I was worried you’d really fallen for him, that you were actually going to give it a try.”
Emily grinned. “No way. I just wanted to stop my mom from setting me up with more people, that’s all. Albert feels the same.”
Elizabeth eyed her, biting back what she really wanted to say.
A moment ago, she’d been thinking—if Emily actually did end up with Albert Rivera, then what about Tristan Davis? She really was losing sleep over that guy.
After a moment, Elizabeth couldn’t help but add quietly, “Still, you should keep your distance. I don’t know… I just get the feeling Albert’s pretty interested in you.”
Emily didn’t even pause before brushing it off. “He’s not. You’re overthinking it.”
The entire evening, she and Albert had kept things strictly polite, never crossing any lines.
Elizabeth, though, just gave her a knowing look. “Well, you never know what the future holds.”
Emily gave her a playful smack on the arm. “Stop it!”
Meanwhile, outside, Cynthia Rivera was bundled into the car with her parents. Clinging to her mother’s waist, she buried her face in her mom’s shoulder, feeling utterly miserable.
Mrs. Rivera’s heart ached for her daughter. Stroking Cynthia’s back gently, she asked in a soft voice, “You’re a mess from crying. Who upset you? Just tell us and we’ll take care of it.”
Cynthia sniffled, lifting her head and pouting. “Mom, what exactly did you say to Steven Davis?”
Mrs. Rivera was caught off guard. “Say about what?”
Cynthia fidgeted. “About me marrying Tristan Davis. Did you forget?”
Suddenly understanding, Mrs. Rivera ventured, “Did Tristan Davis do something to upset you? Or was it someone else from his family?”
Cynthia shook her head hard. “No, no, it’s not that. Tristan didn’t do anything. I just… I just can’t believe it’s real. You know I’ve liked him for a long time.”
