He was sitting far enough away that he could only make out the small ID photo in the upper right corner.
Tristan Davis, assuming it was a job application, reached out for the stack of papers and said, “So the company’s hiring?”
At his words, both Emily Blair and Elizabeth Wilson’s eyes darted to the documents.
Emily’s lips parted, her expression blank with surprise.
Elizabeth’s eyes went wide; she sprang up from the couch.
Monkey snatching the moon!
Before Tristan could grab the papers, Elizabeth swooped in, bent over, and snatched them up just in time. Hugging the documents to her chest, she shot Tristan a nervous smile, though her scalp tingled with nerves. “Company secrets, you know. You can’t look.”
Tristan shot her a puzzled look, then glanced at Emily. “Since when are there company secrets I’m not allowed to see?”
Both women looked just as stunned as he felt.
With impressive composure, Elizabeth rolled the papers into a tube and grinned. “Take a guess. I’m not telling.”
Tristan chuckled, folding his arms as he leaned back on the couch next to Emily. “Alright, have it your way.”
Elizabeth quickly tucked the papers behind her, sitting down and pretending to focus on the TV.
Tristan turned to Emily. “Any plans for today?”
Elizabeth immediately perked up, eavesdropping with undisguised interest.
Emily hesitated for a moment. “Yeah. I have plans tonight.”
Tristan, assuming she had a business meeting, said, “Work stuff? I checked the calendar from your assistant, and your weekend looks completely free.”
Emily pressed her lips together.
