Andrew Lane’s voice was low and steady. “It’s nothing serious. I just hope you can accompany me.”

Tristan Davis pressed his lips together, his face turning cold almost involuntarily.

Emily Blair was silent for a moment before speaking up. “Is there anything else you’d like, Mr. Lane? I’ll do my best to accommodate.”

“No, that’s my only request,” Andrew replied crisply.

Emily had no idea what Andrew Lane was up to. Of course she hesitated—she didn’t want to get involved with him outside of work if she could help it.

She tried to negotiate, but Andrew cut her off. “All I’m asking is for you to go somewhere with me. Nothing more, Ms. Blair. You don’t have to worry.”

“Can I at least ask where we’re going?” Emily pressed.

Andrew Lane shook his head. “That’s confidential for now. But it’s not dangerous, and I’ll only need you for as long as it takes Tristan to finish a coffee.”

This man—his wife had just passed away and now he was pulling this? He was unbelievable.

Tristan felt his blood pressure spike. He glanced at Emily, and in just one look, he could tell she was considering saying yes.

Tristan clenched his jaw, held back his frustration, and turned away.

Emily was ambitious, and he didn’t want to upset her over something like this.

After a beat, Emily finally agreed. “Alright.”

Andrew nodded. “Tomorrow at 10 a.m., I’ll pick you up at Vertex International.”

Tristan drew a sharp breath, trying to swallow his anger. He spoke as calmly as he could manage. “Oh? In that case, Mr. Lane, do you mind if I come along too?”

Andrew shot Tristan a glance but said nothing, turning instead to Emily.

Tristan nearly groaned out loud. What kind of look was that supposed to be?

Emily got the message. She patted Tristan’s shoulder reassuringly. “I’ll need you at the office tomorrow morning. I’ll be quick—I’ll come right back.”
