“I was even asked if I knew Matthew Ross. I told her I didn’t, said she must have mistaken me for someone else. Helen and I didn’t say a word.”
Isabella Austin’s suspicion didn’t let up. “What about Emily Blair reporting you? How’s that going? What’s the school’s stance?”
Brandon Ross hesitated for a moment. “…Ms. Austin, didn’t you tell me you’d take care of this?”
Isabella’s expression flickered, betraying her unease. She hadn’t had a moment to deal with Brandon and Helen’s mess.
She forced her tone to sound firm, trying to hide her guilt. “I’m working on it. Don’t ask too many questions. I just need to know if there are any new developments, so I can handle things properly.”
On the other end, Brandon’s face darkened.
Just as he’d expected, Isabella didn’t really care about him or Helen—she probably hadn’t done a thing about their situation.
Good thing they’d managed to keep Emily Blair quiet back then, stopped her from submitting the whole report.
Brandon lied without skipping a beat. “We didn’t do what Emily wanted, so she got mad and swore she’d report us. But luckily, the evidence she turned in was incomplete. The administration couldn’t prove Helen and I were impersonating anyone, so for now, the case is shelved. We’re still students.”
Isabella let out a shaky breath, relief washing over her. “Alright, that’s good.”
“Okay, I got it. I’m hanging up now.”
After ending the call, Isabella pressed her palm to her chest, willing her frantic heart to slow down.
Thank God, things weren’t completely out of control yet.
A chilly breeze drifted across the balcony. Isabella shivered and turned to head back inside—just as the balcony door swung open behind her.
