Matthew Ross’s pupils trembled violently.

Emily Blair said, “Second option: you come clean to the police yourself. Tell them the truth—who’s really behind this. If you do, I’ll make sure your brother and sister graduate without any trouble.”

Matthew’s eyes flickered with uncertainty.

Emily continued, “It’s your decision—but let me be clear. Even if you pick the first option, I’ll keep digging until I find who you’re protecting, and I’ll drag her out into the open. The only difference is, if you choose the first, it’ll just take me a little longer to solve this. The end result will be the same either way, except for one thing: your siblings’ degrees.”

“So think carefully. Which option is really better for you—and for them?”

Anxiety gnawed at Matthew. His free hand tapped restlessly on the polished table, fingers curled and drumming a nervous rhythm. His face had gone pale, lips trembling unconsciously, a sheen of sweat breaking out on his brow.

Emily waited. After a moment, she heard his voice come through the receiver.

A whisper, barely audible: “Can you really guarantee they’ll graduate?”

Emily tipped her chin up. “I’m Emily Blair, founder of Vertex International. I keep my promises.”

“Vertex International…” Matthew repeated the name, dazed, as if only now realizing who he was speaking to. He slowly looked up. “You’re Emily Blair from Vertex International?”

“That’s right.”

He bowed his head, both fists clenching tightly.

Emily heard him breathing hard, and then his hoarse voice: “…I choose the second.”

She smiled, satisfaction flickering in her eyes.

“I’ll be in Astoria tomorrow at three in the afternoon,” she said. “I expect the police to have your statement before I land. If I don’t have confirmation by the time I get off the plane, I’ll assume you’ve changed your mind. Do you understand?”

Her voice was gentle and calm, but to Matthew it sounded like a thunderclap.
