When Yvette was a little girl, she had drowned while playing in the village pond.
Why in the world would Jasper even know her at all?
He certainly wasn’t related to Aunt Helen in any way. In the twenty years that Willow had lived with her, she’d never heard the Hughes name mentioned even once.
Jasper laid that bouquet of flowers back down upon the grave reverently, and didn’t answer her question.
Meanwhile, Samantha’s heart was racing wildly. She was absolutely terrified that Willow’s inquiry would expose her own lies. “I told Mr Jasper about our Yvette,” she answered for him. “He’s a kind soul with a gentle heart, so he was moved to come here and pay a visit to her grave. So what?”
Willow frowned slightly, but didn’t say anything out loud. So… it was Samantha who had told Jasper about Yvette…
Perhaps these two were close? Otherwise, why would Samantha tell an outsider about this chapter of their family history?
It would also explain why Jasper would come all this way to pay his respects to Samantha’s cousin.
So that was why Samantha could freely enter the Hughes Corporation headquarters whenever she pleased, even strolling right into Jasper’s office.
Exactly how close were they…?
Jasper continued to kneel there, gazing intently at Yvette’s headstone for a long moment. This was the girl he’d slept with, five years ago… she’d been so alive with passion, yet also tender and warm… he still remembered it vividly, as though it had only happened just last night.
But now, she was lost to him forever, her body buried beneath this mound of dirt.
Perhaps it was time for him to move on…
“Mr Jasper, you’ve traveled a long way to reach our village… you must be hungry! You’re welcome to visit my place! I’ll prepare a lovely feast for you!” Samantha hovered near Jasper, a big smile on her face, eager to please.
Jasper looked towards Willow. “I’ll be visiting her home.”
He wanted to see what kind of home Yvette had grown up in.
She was really about to freak out, here!
“Enough nonsense! Lead the way!” Jasper’s tone was sharp. He’d made up his mind.
That fierce voice… that powerful aura of his… it caused Willow’s shoulders to tremble a little.
She simply didn’t have the strength to resist him. There was no choice but to bring him back home with her.
As she watched all of this, Samantha appeared calm on the outside… but she was a raging storm on the inside.
What was she going to do?! She couldn’t stop Jasper from following Willow home!
No, she had to follow after them! She had to keep them from talking about what happened five years ago!
Willow led the way out of the graveyard. Jasper followed behind her… and Samantha followed after, terrified of losing him!
