Willow swallowed hard. Wasn’t Mr. Hughes single? Why would he have a mother-in-law?
Was he secretly married?
She couldn’t understand the lives of the rich.
A secretary’s job included shielding the CEO from troublesome matters.
“I’ve never heard Mr. Hughes mention that he has a mother-in-law. Is she mistaken? Please have her wait for a moment. I’ll come over now.”
It would be a dereliction of duty if she easily let some liar through and allowed them to disturb Mr. Hughes.
If that person was really Mr. Hughes’ mother-in-law, she would have offended them by rejecting their visitation, which was also a dereliction of duty.
Hence, she had to make sure before making a decision.
“Alright,” the receptionist replied. After hanging up the phone, she maintained her smile and said politely to the middle-aged woman, “I’m sorry, our secretary says she’s not aware that Mr. Hughes has a mother-in-law. Please wait for a moment. She coming down now.”
Lara became anxious. She had always been a loud character with a booming voice. She tried to prove herself by saying, “Your Mr. Hughes built a villa for my family and sent my daughter home. Doesn’t this prove that they’re dating? I’m really the future mother-in-law of Mr. Hughes. Let me in now. I want to see him and talk some sense into him.”
The doors of the CEO’s exclusive elevator coincidentally opened to reveal Jasper’s striking figure. He exuded the air of nobility as he donned a black tailored suit paired with a dark purple necktie.
Lara had been so loud that Jasper happened to hear her say that she was his future mother-in-law, and that she was here to talk some sense into him the instant the elevator doors opened.
He exited the elevator and looked at the front desk.
“Hello, Mr. Hughes.” The receptionist immediately straightened up and bowed.
Lara looked back to see a handsome and dignified man. She found him familiar. It was the man she had seen back at Nason Village.
After hearing the receptionist address him as ‘Mr. Hughes’, she was sure that he was Willow’s boss.
Lara hurried over to him nervously. “Wait, Mr. Hughes. I want to talk to you.” She had always been the straightforward type who said whatever came to mind.
Willow had returned one morning and cried in her arms, saying that she was told that she wasn’t worthy of him.
Lara’s heart ached whenever she recalled that scene.
Although she frequently scolded her daughter for being a disappointment, as a mother, her heart still ached to see Willow hurt.
Tyson was with Jasper. He stopped to block Lara from coming too close.
As Jasper’s number-one assistant, he had seen too many women coveting Jasper’s looks, background, and personal worth. They were fanatic, aggressive, and persistent almost to the point of madness.
It wasn’t uncommon to see women like Lara who came to harass Jasper using their daughters as an excuse.
Tyson stopped Lara to prevent her from following Jasper. He said sternly, “Madam, not everyone can catch Mr. Hughes’ eye. There are tons of women who want to marry him. Your daughter better be from an important family.”
“My daughter is…” Lara blurted anxiously.
