Charlotte didn't linger for long after receiving the cookies. She left soon after, carrying the small gift with her.
Back at home, Kayden rushed straight to his room the moment she was gone. Carefully, he wrapped the strand of hair he had collected and put it away safely.
He had already done his research. To confirm whether they were truly mother and son, he would need to run a DNA test. For days, he had been searching for the right opportunity. Tonight, he finally had what he needed—Charlotte's hair.
His heart raced with anticipation. Internally, he was already wishing and hoping. He silently prayed for just one thing—"Please let her be my mother."
The next morning, on the way to kindergarten, Kayden asked the driver, Lachlan Lister, to change their route. "Mr. Lister, let's not go to kindergarten just yet. I'm worried about Daddy's eyes. I want to stop by the hospital first and check on his condition. We can head to the kindergarten afterward. Is that okay?"
Lachlan, moved by Kayden's concern, agreed right away. "Of course, I'll take you there."
"Thank you, Mr. Lister. But please don't tell Daddy about this."
"Alright," Lachlan replied, thinking Kayden simply did not want his father to worry.
Once they reached the hospital, Kayden went straight to the director's office. He handed over the two carefully prepared hair samples. "Mr. Foster, I need your help with something. Can you check the DNA between these two samples? I want to know if there's a parent-child match."
The director, David Foster, recognized Kayden immediately and looked down at the two strands of hair with some surprise. "You want to run a DNA test?"
Kayden nodded seriously. "Yes. A friend of my dad's asked me to drop these off on their behalf. But please, Mr. Foster, keep this a secret."
David smiled kindly. "Don't worry, Kayden. Our hospital never discloses any client's information."
Given that their hospital relied on donations from Norman Group, David did not question it further. A simple DNA test was no trouble at all.
After leaving clear instructions, Kayden felt reassured and headed off to kindergarten.
Brian had no idea any of this was happening. That morning, Brian stayed home, conducting several remote meetings to handle urgent work. By the time he wrapped up, it was already close to noon.
While he was having lunch, Estelle arrived. She was worried about his recovery and had come to check on his condition personally.
Brian clearly disliked these gatherings, but out of respect for his late grandfather and the family ties, he agreed without protest.
"Which restaurant?"
"Jardin Restaurant," Estelle replied.
Brian gave a brief nod. "Understood. I'll be there on time."
Satisfied with his response, Estelle finally left.
…
That evening, Charlotte also received a call from her close friend, Ivy. They had planned to meet for dinner, and with Matthias recently back in the country, they decided to invite him along as well. Three people at the table would make things less awkward.
Their dinner was scheduled at Jardin Restaurant. The venue was well-known in Marindale and a popular choice for high-profile gatherings. It was Ivy who had chosen the restaurant.
