Before Maggie or Johnny could respond, Daphne let out another scoff, her gaze fixed hard on Maggie.

“Still, Ms. Miller. The public will see right through this. No one will buy your excuses anymore. Save yourself what little dignity you have left.”

Maggie remained impassive at those words. Johnny, however, broke into a dry laugh and turned toward Daphne.

“The public will see right through it.’ What a noble-sounding line.” He glanced over at Yale standing on the small stage. “I truly admire how the two of you charge into battle, defending your friend with such righteous fire. But the person I admire most of all is Ms. Brown.”

His eyes locked onto Julia.

“Ms. Brown, Yale cares for you deeply, and Daphne considers you her closest friend. Yet you’ve been lying straight to their faces. How do you live with that?”

He did not wait for Julia to reply and chuckled coldly.

“Oh, right. Conscience isn’t exactly your strong suit. It runs in your family, after all.”

Julia’s features tightened. She ignored Johnny’s taunt and stared toward Maggie, as if searching for some kind of confirmation.

Daphne, Yale, Rex, and Levi all believed no amount of arguing could shift public opinion at this point.

Franklin’s testimony, which might have exonerated Maggie, had now been written off as biased because of Isabella.

Still, they expected Maggie and Johnny would keep fighting back.

Johnny’s sharp remark caught every single one of them off-guard.

Daphne and Yale’s expressions turned icy.

Glen, Harry, and Jimmy all knew the tide was heavily stacked against Maggie, and they froze, stunned by Johnny’s vicious turn.

Before they could process what had just happened, Daphne lashed out.

“Mr. Gray. I never would have expected this from a grown man. You can’t even tell right from wrong, and now you hurl these cruel insults at a woman in front of everyone-”
