"Do you really think I can't handle you?"
With just a few words, he'd cornered her, and Selena felt rooted to the spot. Clenching her purse tightly, she forced a smile. "Alright, you're the client, your call."
Grabbing the outfit, she muttered curses under her breath as she headed to the bathroom to change.
In the car, Everett's expression softened a bit, but Selena grew more frustrated. She whipped out her phone, furiously texting Joy to vent her irritation. Joy didn't reply—maybe she was busy—leaving Selena's frustration unresolved.
Dinner was booked at Bennett Manor, a property owned by Bennett Corporation. As they reached the entrance of the private dining room, Everett paused and turned to her.
"What?" Selena asked, confused.
"Link arms with me."
"Why?"
Everett explained briefly, "This dinner is to welcome Callum back. He missed our wedding celebration, so we're making it up to him now."
Selena hadn't anticipated this. As a young couple, hosting a dinner for his close friend seemed normal. For three years, she'd hoped Everett would introduce her to his friends to be part of his social circle. But despite her subtle hints, Everett didn't budge. Once, she stumbled upon Everett dining with his friends and Margot.
She stood outside, stunned. As his lawful wife, she didn't dare confront him, fearing she'd anger Everett and be cast aside.
Gramps...
Of course, everything was about Gramps for Everett, the devoted grandson.
It was like a splash of cold water, and Selena inwardly mocked herself for feeling a flicker of emotion and hurt over his gesture.
She closed her eyes for a moment, pushing aside her sentimental thoughts. Then, with a bright smile, she linked arms with Everett, ready to face whatever came next.
"Mr. Bennett, don't worry. Tonight, I'll put on the same Oscar-worthy performance I do in bed, pretending every moment is genuine. It'll be flawless!"
