Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire novel Chapter 284

The room lit up with a sudden snap, the brightness making Selena squint instinctively. She heard quick footsteps coming towards her bed, and soon, a gentle hand rested on her shoulder.

Startled, Selena shrank back.

"It's just me," a voice said softly as if sensing her fear.

Selena slowly looked up to see Everett’s handsome face coming into view. The tension and fear in her eyes gave way to indifference, with a barely noticeable hint of resistance. She brushed his hand away, lay back down, and closed her eyes. She was clearly not in the mood for conversation or even a glance in his direction.

Everett felt a pang of displeasure at her coldness. He hadn’t intended to visit tonight, hoping some distance would help them both cool off and avoid further arguments that would only cause more hurt. After leaving the hospital that morning, he had buried himself in work, not allowing himself a moment's rest. He skipped meals as he busied himself all day and into the evening.

Yet, as the calm night enveloped the city outside his office window, his thoughts drifted back to her. Before he realized it, he found himself driving to the hospital.

Since he was already there, he thought she might be asleep, so he planned to just check on her briefly. But to his surprise, she was still awake.

Despite his irritation, Everett was too drained to hold onto his frustration. He sat by the head of the bed, casually loosening his tie and unbuttoning his cuffs. Strangely, even without a word from Selena, her mere presence seemed to ease his tension.

He glanced over at her; she had turned away, showing only her back and frail shoulders, so thin they seemed like they could shatter with a gust of wind. The sight tugged at his heart painfully.

After a long silence, Everett finally spoke, trying to strike up a conversation. "Ava mentioned you ate quite a bit today. That's great. If you’re not into hospital food, just tell me what you’re craving, and I’ll have it brought over, okay?"

"Selena..." he called her name, his hand firm on her shoulder as he gently turned her to face him.

He wasn’t going to let her avoid him. His fingers softly gripped her chin as he leaned in, his breath warm against her cheek. "Don’t shut me out. Talk to me, please?"

This closeness felt surreal, as if all their troubles were just a bad dream.

Selena’s heart ached. She couldn’t fathom how he could pretend nothing had happened.
