Lauren was losing her mind, her thoughts consumed by daydreams and sleepless nights.
...
After a whirlwind day at work, Josefina picked up a call from Brandon.
“Josie, do you have some time today? Maybe bring Oliver over for dinner at our place?” Grandpa Brandon's warm voice came through the phone.
Josefina couldn't help but chuckle. The old man had a knack for making it sound like she was his real granddaughter and Oliver her husband.
Laughing, Josefina said, “Grandpa Brandon, why don’t you give Oliver a call yourself? See if he’s free today.”
“Ah, that boy Oliver, every time I call him, he’s either busy or, well, busy. Josie, you’re the only one who can sway him. If you tell Oliver to head east, he wouldn’t dare go west. He listens to you.”
“Grandpa Brandon, I’ll give him a call in a bit, see if he can make some time to come home and check on you.”
“Josie, my dear, it’s not enough for him to come alone; I want you to come along too. I’ve been feeling a bit of chest tightness lately, like I can’t catch my breath.”
“Grandpa Brandon, I’ll swing by after work to see you.”
“Alright, I’ll be waiting. And I’ll have the kitchen whip up some of your favorite dishes. Josie, you and Oliver come over after work. I’ll be here waiting. I don’t want to keep you from your job, so you go on and take care. Remember to rest.”
With a sense of contentment, Grandpa Brandon hung up the phone.
Then he instructed, “Bennett, tell the kitchen to prepare extra, especially the dishes Oliver and Josie love. And remember, the ingredients must be fresh.”
“Sir, I’ve already passed on your instructions. Once Ms. Josefina gets your call, she’s sure to agree to come. She’s a kind-hearted and good girl.”
Brandon nodded with a beaming smile, “She’s a thoughtful child, always so dutiful. Having her by Oliver's side eases my mind. It keeps the boy from acting rashly.”
Bennett nodded subconsciously, then remembering something, added, “Sir, I've received a call from young master Dominic. He wishes to come by for a visit.”
