Dorian had no idea that his sister, Josefina, was a martial arts whiz. He always saw her as delicate, the kind of girl you'd picture sipping tea and reading Jane Austen, not throwing punches.
"Look, Dorian, Oliver isn't as hot-headed as you think. I've spent some time with him, and once you get past that tough exterior, he's actually pretty sweet."
Dorian's anxiety doubled. "Sis, you've been charmed by his looks! You don't know the real Oliver like I do. We've known each other for years. We're not friends, but I've seen his temper flare up. Listen to your big bro and steer clear of Oliver."
Josefina just listened, saying nothing.
Dorian was usually a man of few words, but today he was practically spilling over.
Clearly, he was worried about her getting hurt.
With patience, Josefina replied, "Dorian, I can take care of myself. Oliver and I are just getting to know each other. It's not like we're planning a wedding or anything."
"Sis, I'm not some old-fashioned dude. I just want you to be happy, that's all. If you don't believe me, then keep seeing Oliver, but watch him closely before you make any other decisions."
"Alright, thanks, Dorian."
"No worries, sis. Get some sleep, okay?"
Just as Dorian finished, his phone buzzed with a message from Garrett, their dad, asking him to swing by.
"Sis, Dad needs me for a sec. I'll catch you later."
"Bye, Dorian."
Watching his sister, as sweet and angelic as she was, Dorian still felt Josefina deserved a better man.
...
She gently pushed him away. "Oliver, you're being petty."
Oliver wrapped his arms around her from behind, his chin resting on top of her head, his voice deep and magnetic. "Josie, I won't let anyone say we're not right for each other. We're perfect together, absolutely perfect."
Josefina chuckled. "Oliver, Dorian was just speaking off the cuff, I didn't take it seriously. Why are you getting so hung up on it?"
His voice was a soft murmur above her. "I'm scared of losing you."
Josefina paused, suddenly seeing the tough, domineering Oliver like a little kid afraid of being left alone. Knowing about Oliver's past, she could understand where he was coming from.
She turned to face him, tilting her head to look into his eyes, hands cupping his face, and with a sweet smile, she reassured him. "Oliver, what I think is what matters the most. Why worry about what anyone else says? You're being silly."
Oliver's lips curved into an elegant smile, and he leaned down to kiss Josefina...
