Oliver's skepticism didn't fade with Lena's explanation. If anything, it only deepened his suspicions.
His icy stare sent a chill down Lena's spine. Standing beside Aunt Hattie, Lena's eyes were clear as spring water, her emotions as controlled as a seasoned actress.
"Mom, would you like some water? I'll get you a glass," she offered, her voice steady.
Turning to Oliver, she asked, "How about you, Ollie? Tea or just plain water?"
"I don't want anything," Oliver shot back, his tone curt.
With that, Oliver sat down, dismissing Lena with his indifference. Nonetheless, she headed to the kitchen to make tea.
...
Upstairs in the bedroom, Emily stirred awake.
Grandpa Robert and Garrett were both elated and astonished, with Grandpa Robert nearly moved to tears.
"Emmy, you're awake! Do you recognize me? Do you remember Zhenyang, your son?" Grandpa Robert's voice quivered with emotion.
Garrett nodded eagerly, "Mom, it's Zhenyang, your eldest. Do you recognize me?"
Emily's gaze moved from Grandpa Robert's face to Garrett's, and finally settled on Josefina.
With a sweet and polite demeanor, Josefina said, "Hello, Grandma. I'm Josefina, your granddaughter."
Having been bedridden for so long, Emily felt utterly weak and unable to rise. Garrett reached for a remote and adjusted the head of the bed higher, propping Emily up against the headboard.
Grandpa Robert quickly handed her a glass of water with a straw to help her calm down.
Garrett, too, was shocked by the revelation, "Mom, someone pushed you? I never imagined someone would dare to harm you like that!"
Grandpa Robert's brows furrowed in concern. "Emmy, if you were pushed, there must have been a reason. Did you hear something you weren't supposed to, see something incriminating that led to this attack?"
Josefina nodded in agreement. "Grandma, think about it. Did you stumble upon a secret, something that forced the perpetrator to act so drastically?"
Josefina had heard from Aunt Hattie that Grandma was kind and gentle, treating servants with respect and maintaining a good relationship with her mother-in-law.
Such a sweet old lady, why would anyone push her?
Emily, still groggy from her ordeal, struggled to recall the events of four years ago. Seeing her grandmother's troubled state, Josefina advised her to rest and regain her strength.
