Anyone walking by might’ve thought Cash was picking a fight, but Alfie and Josefina knew exactly what he meant.
No matter how you looked at it, everything circled back to Logan and his not-so-average health.
“Master, if Logan doesn’t want to go back with you, just let him stay in Westwood,” Josefina said.
Cash chimed in, “Little sis, why not let Logan stay with me? I’ve got the time, and I can keep an eye on him.”
Alfie shook his head. “Logan’s made up his mind. Doesn’t matter what you say, he’s not going anywhere with you. So, let’s just respect his choice.”
He turned to Josefina, “Josie, your senior brother and I will stick around Westwood for a bit. If anything comes up with Logan, just say the word—we’ll be here.”
Josefina could tell her master and Alfie were only worried about her, afraid she’d get buried under all these problems alone.
“Thank you, Master. Thank you, Alfie.”
Cash smiled. “No need for thanks, Josie. About what you asked me to look into—I’ve got the answer. Cole and Brandon are really father and son.”
The DNA results were in. That was that.
“Guess I was just overthinking it,” Josefina muttered, a little lost in her own thoughts.
…
When Josefina got back to school, she found a crowd blocking the Medical Society’s door.
Mandy was at the front with a megaphone, her voice echoing down the hallway. “Alright, everyone, you can head out now! No need to stand around here. We used to need more people, but not anymore. We’re not recruiting, so please, move along!”
One of the Medical Society members didn’t bother hiding her feelings. “You all used to look down on us. Now you want to join? That’s rich.”
“Stop gawking. Nothing here’s for you.”
“Regret joining Cassandra’s group now, huh?”
