Josefina dropped into a chair and pulled a check from her bag.
Cassandra and Tammie exchanged confused looks, but they sat down too. After standing around for so long—and that whole mess with the woman in the hat—they were worn out.
Mother and daughter sat close together, both staring at the check in Josefina’s hand, their faces full of uncertainty.
Josefina’s face was serious as she spoke, her voice steady and heavy with meaning. “Before Grandma passed, she left me a letter. She said if Uncle’s business ever ran into trouble and needed help, she’d prepared this money—five hundred thousand. If you take it, I don’t want to see you around me again. Tammie, make your choice.”
She pulled the letter out, too.
If it weren’t for Grandma, Josefina wouldn’t have given them a single penny.
Tammie recognized Grandma’s handwriting immediately. After reading it, shame washed over her. She felt like she couldn’t even look at herself.
Cassandra hadn’t expected Josefina to bring out Grandma’s letter, either.
Honestly, Josefina could’ve just pretended she didn’t know and kept the money for herself. But she didn’t.
Cassandra felt a mess inside—guilt, regret, all of it churning.
“Honestly, I don’t want to see you at all. If you weren’t Grandma’s family, I wouldn’t even let you in the door. Just having you here ruins my mood,” Josefina said, her words sharp and cold.
Tammie stepped aside to call her husband, Dane, and filled him in.
Dane was stunned. He never realized how much the old lady had done for him. Guilt hit him hard.
“Tammie, you and Cassandra need to stop giving Fiona a hard time. She’s the granddaughter my mom chose. I’m the one who let her down—I didn’t live up to her hopes,” Dane said quietly.
Tammie’s cheeks burned with embarrassment.
Josefina stood, looking at the two of them. “I’ve said what I needed to say and handed over what I brought. The rest is up to you.”
She walked out, not looking back.
Cassandra and Tammie sat in silence, watching her leave, both feeling restless and uneasy.
