– Abandon
–LIA’S POV–
She tried to glare at him, but the emotion in her eyes wasn’t anger. It was pain.
“I thought? No, John, I know. You cheated on me with that human girl. You hated me for giving Lia away, so you did it for revenge. I smelled her all over you. On your skin, not just your clothes.”
John sighed. “She was nothing but a friend, Sel. I told you.”
“Then explain the scent,” she snapped, eyes glimmering. “Explain why you left right after, pretending it was because I gave Lia away. Why you didn’t even think I deserved a real explanation.”
“I didn’t cheat on you, whether you believe it or not. Lily called me, sobbing and terrified. She had been raped by her boyfriend. I rushed to her rescue and found her naked. So I gave her my shirt because I didn’t think to take a jacket in my hurry. She wore that and I took her home, waited for her to change and return it to me. Then I came to you, still wearing that. That’s how her scent was on my skin.”
Selene faltered, her lips trembling. “No,” she shook her head, “you’re lying. If that was the case, you would have told me then
X Close
But you didn’t. You left instead.”
“I left because I was mad,” John cried, pulling her closer. “And hurt. Because despite being a goddess, you still didn’t know me enough to trust me. Because even while being a goddess, you gave our child away, instead of doing everything in your power to keep her close and protect her. You didn’t love her like a daughter. You loved her like a creation.”
My heart tightened in my chest, and I clenched my jaw.
“You had no right to decide the entire course of her life, Selene. She was my daughter, not your damned experiment. It broke me. I was upset, and yes, I didn’t like this new side of you. But I couldn’t stop loving you. I just needed to get away from you because every time I looked at you, it reminded me of our daughter. Your refusal to trust me was the final straw. I decided I didn’t want to be with you anymore.”
Selene closed her eyes, like it pained her.
“I thought you’d… you’d just go back to the sky because that’s where you truly belonged. I realised I wasn’t strong enough to love a goddess. Your emotions weren’t in tune with mine, Sel. I did what I thought was best for both of us. Just like you did what you thought was best for Lia.”
Sobs left her lips now, her strong, angry front crumbling.
That’s when I saw it.
A girl. Broken and damaged.
It didn’t justify her actions.
“Yes,” he chuckled. “I thought you were listening.”
She stared at him, studying him carefully.
I could see it. Understanding. Realisation. It all reflected in her
eyes.
I glanced at Zane, and gave him a nod.

“Selene,” he said softly, and her eyes shot to him. “My entire life, I have worshipped you. Looked up to you. Loved you. All of us have, all your werewolves. And from the moment we’re grown enough to understand, we’re told stories of the Moon Goddess who shines her light on us. The Goddess who will find us in death and lead us home.”
His heart pounded, and I felt the urge to rush up to him, to pull him into my arms, but resisted.
“A few months ago, I died. But no one came to lead me out of the void. I was stuck in there until Lia reached out and commanded me back to life. But everyone else, all your other creations and disciples–they’ve been waiting for you the last seventeen years. While you’ve been here, hopelessly searching for true love. We’re the ones who love you, Selene. Without knowing you. Without ever speaking to you. We have faith in you. And those stuck in the void right now, I know that they still trust you’ll come. Please, Goddess,” he dropped to his knees, tears rolling down his cheeks, “don’t abandon them in the dark like you’ve been abandoned before.”
