I found Sapphire leaning against a tree, arms folded, expression somewhere between annoyed and impatient.

“Took you long enough,” she muttered as I jogged up to her.

I grinned sheepishly. “Had to make sure I wasn’t being followed.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Yeah, right. As if you’ve ever had anyone except me stalking you.”

I frowned. “I get followed all the time. By dangerous people. Pack rivals.”

“Sure.” She scoffed. “So what now? You lot always look like you’re saving the world, but no one ever has an actual plan. Is that what you’re here for again? Did Lia command the whole town to kill itself again? Or better yet, all werewolves?”

“I’m a werewolf,” I muttered.

She grinned. “You’re different, baby. You don’t count.”

I scratched the back of my neck. “Well… there is a bit of a mess.”

“A bit?” she echoed, narrowing her eyes.

I gave her the most harmless smile I could manage. “The Moon Goddess may or may not have kidnapped Lia’s mom and… uh… taken her place.”

Her jaw actually dropped. Then she groaned loudly, pushing off the tree. “Werewolves. I swear, you can never solve your own problems without dragging gods or witches into it. What would you even do without me?”

“Fall apart,” I said instantly, catching her hand before she could pull away. “Completely and utterly.”

She tried to glare at me, but her lips twitched. “Flattery. You’re impossible.”

“True, but you like me that way.” I tugged her towards the car, and she let me, still shaking her head like she couldn’t believe that out of all people, fate had chosen me for her.

The engine started with a growl, and the moment we hit the road, she flicked on the radio. A pop song blasted, and she drummed her fingers on the dashboard, pretending not to smile.

I stole a glance at her, warmth settling in my chest. “See, this is why the universe balances things out. Moon Goddesses cause chaos, but then I get you sitting here, distracting me with that smile.”

For a moment, even with the Moon Goddess looming over us, it almost felt like everything was going to be fine.

My mouth opened, then closed again. I pursed my lips, thinking about it.

Zane stared at me with a knowing look.

I glanced at Sapphire, then shook my head slowly, face burning with shame. “I… didn’t bring anything. I didn’t think I’d need to.”

I was the most terrible daughter in the world.

My stomach twisted as realisation dawned on me. “Which means…”

My heart thudded in my chest like it wanted out.

I had to go home. See the woman who wore my mom’s face, who spoke in her voice, who smiled like she had raised me. The Moon Goddess wasn’t my mom, but she moved through my house like she belonged there. She kissed Dad like she’d taken vows with him.

The thought of stepping back into that kitchen, of sitting across from her at the table, made my chest tighten.

Sapphire’s gaze softened. “I know it’s not ideal. But it’s the only way forward. Otherwise we’re standing still, and you don’t have the time for that.”
