We didn’t talk much on the way back to the pack house, the silence between us awkward and uncomfortable. Like we were both afraid to say the wrong thing.

Zane kept glancing at me, waiting, but I stared at the road and tried to keep my head from spinning. I needed to say it right. I needed to actually just let it out.

When we were about ten minutes away from the pack house, Zane decided he’d had enough. So he swerved the car to the side and parked it, turning to me fully.

I glanced at him, swallowing, my heart hammering in my

chest.

He raised his eyebrows, his expression full of warmth. Okay, love,he said, his blue eyes boring into mine. Tell me. What is it?

My hands were cold. It’s about the exam,I said, my voice not above a whisper.

Zane frowned. Maths?

Yeah.I nodded, looking away from him.

The car felt like it was running out of air.

What about it?he asked.

I let out a shaky breath. I didn’t tell you everything that day, when you cornered me in the washroom. I hid things.

Zane didn’t push. He just watched me, and that made it worse. I felt a shiver crawl through me.

I almost lost control, Zane,I said. Properly. My eyes started glowing, claws came out, and it happened right there in front of everyone. I got mad at the teacher. Someone screamed. A few people ran. Others pulled out their phones and started recording. I could hear cameras clicking. It was loud, messy, and I couldn’t think.

Zane blinked, but he kept quiet.

I panicked,I went on. I told everyone to freeze.

He shifted. And?

They froze,I said quietly. All of them. The room just… stopped. No blinking. No breathing. Chairs mid scrape. Pens mid air. You didn’t move either.

He looked like he was trying to picture it, but I kept going before I lost my nerve.

I tried to get you to move again. I called Sapphire. She didn’t

answer the phone, and you weren’t listening. The command

wasn’t working. I thought my life was over.

Zane pressed a fist to his mouth, lowering his gaze.

I mustered the guts to go on.

Then Selene walked in,I said softly. She wasn’t surprised. She didn’t even look confused. It was like she already knew what she’d find. Time didn’t start again. It stayed frozen. She came up to me and told me to breathe. She touched my arms and told me to calm down. She kept saying I was okay. And then she fixed it. Just like a mother would pull her daughter out of an impossible situation, she took everything upon herself and fixed it.

Fixed it how?he asked, barely above a whisper.

She made them delete the pictures and videos,I said. She told them to go back to their seats. She put everything back the way it was. It was like nothing had happened. Like the world rolled back a few minutes just for us.

I rubbed my thumb over my palm, trying to warm it. I thanked her, and cried, because in that moment, she saved my life, Zane. She stopped everything from falling apart.

Zane sighed, watching me.

I stared back at him. She also said I shouldn’t tell you. That telling you would only make it worse. That it would complicate

things and worry you. I knew you’d doubt her intentions for helping, so I kept quiet. For a moment, I just wanted to believe that the woman who gave birth to me cared. That deep down, she did love me. And I knew you’d try to show me another perspective. That she might haveshe might have caused what happened in the first place. That she could be planning something else. So I didn’t tell you that she was there. I hid that part from

you.

Zane shifted in his seat and turned back to the road, starting the

car.

I sank into my seat, my throat burning.

He didn’t say a word the whole way back. He drove with both hands on the wheel, jaw tight, eyes on the road. I didn’t poke him. I was afraid if he snapped even slightly, I’d break down into sobs. Not because he was mad. But because I felt so guilty for hiding the truth from him. Because I saw the disappointment in his gaze when I spoke.

We pulled up to the pack house, and the front door swung open before we even reached the steps. The Hounds were there already, faces tense.

What happened?Aaron asked first.

Are you hurt?Sheila stepped closer, scanning me.

I’m fine,I said, lifting both hands. Promise. Nothing’s wrong.

Silence again. Zane still hadn’t looked at me. I swallowed and stepped in front of him.

Are you mad at me?I asked, my voice breaking.

He shook his head.

Then why aren’t you talking? You’re scaring me.
