Chapter 252 – Morning
–LIA’S POV–
I turned onto my side for the twenty–seventh time, and the fact that I was keeping count was proof that I really couldn’t get my brain to stop.
It didn’t wanna shut up.
Not about Selene. Or Sarah. Or whoever the hell she was.
Not about whoever was up there right now, watching us, playing games like our lives were mere movies they directed.
Not about Zane. The Hounds. What they must be thinking.
And definitely not about how I couldn’t fall asleep no matter how still I lay for how long.
Zane wasn’t asleep either.
He was pretending.
Even fake snored at one point.
But he was awake.
Maybe he’d forgotten I was a werewolf too now, mixed with something much worse.

I could sense when he was awake. It was in the pattern of his breathing, his heart rate, the way his eyes twitched. I didn’t even have to stare at him to notice.
I didn’t tell him, though.
I didn’t want to confront him, or to have him confront me.

My thoughts were all over the place.
And honestly? I was tired.
Of everything.

I let out a huff when my body started to ache in a weird way.
Zane opened his eyes immediately, glancing at me.
I sat up, taking a deep breath.
“You okay?” he asked, sitting up as well.
“No,” I said. “I’m not okay, Zane. Do you remember we have finals in a week?”
He blinked at me, then pursed his lips. “Not really, no.”
“Well, we do.” I turned to face him, a frown on my face. “Do you want to go to school, Zane?”

His eyebrows pulled together. “School?”
“Yes.”
“Tomorrow?”
“No.”
“Then?”

I swallowed, looking away from him, then meeting his gaze again. “Right now,” I said quietly.
He didn’t miss a beat. “Okay, let’s go.” He climbed out of bed, already putting his shoes on.
I remained sitting, frowning at him.
“What?” he asked, throwing on a shirt.
“You didn’t even question it,” I said softly.
“I don’t need to,” he replied. “I know what you’re looking for, Lia. And I think I need the same thing.”
A tired laugh let my lips, and I stared at him for a moment, until he smiled.
“What?” He chuckled.

I opened my arms like a child asking to be picked up. “Just take me away from it all.”
Zane was in front of me at once, scooping me into his arms and making his way out of our room. He even grabbed a jacket for me before stepping out the door.
I gazed at him, my arms around his neck even though I didn’t need to hold him. I trusted he’d never drop me. But I wanted as much of me touching him as possible.
He carried me down the stairs and out of the pack house, before walking to his car and getting in with me still in his lap.
grinned. “You’re gonna drive with me on you?”
“Yeah,” he shrugged, kissing me quickly, “why not?”
I chuckled. “Because you might just crash the car.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t,” he replied, placing a kiss onto my forehead. “I have sharp enough senses to be lost in you and still ensure your safety.”
He grabbed the seatbelt and put it on, strapping me against his chest.
“Ow,” I laughed, “this is uncomfortable.”

“I know. It’s okay. Bear it.”
“That’s so rude,” I muttered, grinning.
“You chose your bully instead of your saviour, love. You should’ve expected this much.” He winked, before firing the engine. “Now hold on tight. I’m feeling a little speedy.”
I smiled and tightened my hold on him, pressing my body to his chest even harder, resting my head against his shoulder.
Zane pulled us out of the parking lot of his pack house, and then really stepped on the accelerator, also rolling the windows down.
The cool night air blew my hair into his eyes, making him squeal. “Hey, I don’t actually wanna crash, love.”
“Sorry,” I laughed, quickly pulling my hair away from his face and tucking it all into my shirt. “Better?” I asked, hugging him again.
“Much better,” he replied, quickly kissing my cheek,
I smiled, my cheeks almost hurting.
“Don’t you think you kiss me way too often?”
Zane scoffed, rolling his eyes. “There’s no such thing. It’s actually never enough.”

“What did I do–”
“To deserve me?”
“Yeah,” I whispered.

“Nothing at all. Because you didn’t have to. Your mere existence was enough to make me fall head over heels for you.”
“If our bond snaps, the words left me before I could stop them, “for any crazy reason—would you still feel the same way about
me?”
Zane was silent for a moment, his eyes on the road.
A smile took over his lips then.
“The bond doesn’t even matter anymore, my love. I love you. Everything about you. Mate bond or not.”
