"Does your apology mean...I will never get him back? ...have I really lost him for good?" Evenly choked, biting her lower lip and looking up at him with pained eyes. I need my Christian with me. He needs to see our babies, he needs to be by my side while I name them. Please don’t tell me you can’t help, please give me something to hold onto. Please...
Evenly pleaded in her mind, but even her desperate eyes said it all, and Rohan wished he could help in any way to ease her of the heartache. Belle was revived, but that didn’t mean she still held the ability to save Rav like she had once planned.
’You should also keep this in mind, young one. Your girl is no longer a reaper, she’s pure human now, who is more weak than what she once was. Be careful not to kill her again because I won’t help bring her back,’ Ereves had told him.
"I am sorry. There’s nothing I can do for him anymore. Corruption has no cure, and no one ever returns to normal after turning," Rohan told her, being honest so she wouldn’t hold on to any hope and be disappointed all over again in the future.
Losing Belle had taught him how deeply one hurt when it came to losing a loved one, and as much as he wanted to be of help, he was helpless. He watched as she clutched her hand to her chest and went down on her knees, sobbing with trembling shoulders, and he suddenly didn’t even know what to do, because apart from his own woman, he wasn’t good at consoling others.
Rohan stood there watching her cry out her heartbreak, feeling helpless until his son stepped forward and handed the baby he was holding to him.
Rohan took the red-haired infant along with his own and then watched his son go down on his knees, gently raising Evenly’s head up and hugging it to his small chest. "Shh, don’t cry. I will find Uncle Rav for you and bring him back to you. After I see my mama, we will find Uncle Rav." He ran his fingers against her hair, and Evenly moved and hugged him, crying.
Rohan stood at the side, watching how much his son had grown in the past days and was consoling someone with so much care. When he had been Angel’s age, he didn’t know the first thing about consoling a person.
The baby in his arm sneezed, causing him to glance down at Rav’s daughter, whose eyes were surprisingly not red but brown, the same shade Rav had before Rohan turned him many years ago. She wasn’t supposed to have normal eyes; they should have been red like every turned vampire’s child. He had seen the other baby’s eyes, a light red, but this one was different. This could only be possible if something had occurred during her birth that forced the baby’s system to change entirely.
Babies born like this, with an altered system between two vampire parents, often suffered complications, as their kind were known as halfbreeds, the weakest kind of vampires. Rohan stared into those brown eyes, feeling his heart go out to a friend who had stood by him yet would never get the chance to stand by his own family or be there for his children, especially one born this way, who would need more attention and care in the future.
’I will do my best to take care of them for you, Rav,’ Rohan promised silently.
Rohan told Evenly to come with them as he would be using a portal to reach the cottage, but she said he should go ahead and reconcile with his wife first, and she needed some time to herself to get a hold of her emotions. He could come back for her and her babies the next day after they had settled.
She helped him wash Roseline and wear the clothes he went to retrieve from the chamber he had shared with Belle, and she had knitted the sweater for the newborn before all this had happened. The girl slept all through the bath.
Angel bathed himself as he told his father he was old enough to do it himself. The boy was eager and filled with anticipation for their meeting with Belle. However, Rohan didn’t tell him she didn’t hold any memories of them yet. He secured his daughter in a sling across his chest and then held his son’s hand.
