Chapter 502: Demon versus Reaper_Part 3

No one had ever threatened any of the elder Grims, but the demon had just succeeded in doing so to the first Grim, who knew the demon meant every word he said and would not leave without destroying his reputation as an elder. He had been the one to sentence Astral, and every reaper had respected him for it. What would they do if they all found out what had happened many centuries ago before he attained this position?

Eden wanted to ignore the demon and his threat, but the demon was still in their world, whistling and going around exploring. The last Eden had heard from a Watcher, the demon was playing hide and seek with the miserable souls, burning anyone who came close to finding his hiding place. The audacity of that demon, to turn his world into a playground and then come and threaten him!

Eden looked at the time and realized twelve hours of mortal time had passed and another more twelve hours and the demon would tell everyone what happened many years ago. "Gather the reapers immediately!" he ordered a Watcher standing nearby, who immediately went to do as he was told.

In no time, thousands of reapers had come to line up before the elder. "Which of you in the high reapers was in charge of perishing Isabelle’s soul?" the first Grim asked. When he had read that she would die, he had randomly picked from the stronger reapers to ensure the punishment was carried out and her soul was gone forever.

The first Grim looked at the lines of reapers, all clad in their black cloaks, scythes in hand. One of them stepped forward.

"It was I, my Lord," said the reaper.

"Did you perish it completely, leaving no fragment behind?" he asked, knowing that sometimes mistakes happened and fragments remained, giving hope for reconstruction. However, when a soul was completely perished, there was no way at all to bring it back; that was the absolute end of that soul.

The reaper, who believed he was being asked to be rewarded for doing his work well, affirmed with confidence, "I perished everything, my Lord. I watched it until there was nothing left of the soul."

If only the first Grim had a face to register his thoughts at that moment, the reapers would have seen how dreadful it looked. He had almost hoped this would be one of those rare times when a reaper made a mistake in perishing a soul. But it turned out this one had done a thorough job in order to be rewarded. Now it seemed there was no way out; the crazy demon would ruin him and cause him to be the next reaper to perish.

While the first Grim was consumed by the thought of how to escape the demon, among the many reapers standing in line, at the far back where the new reapers were gathered, was Kuhn.

Kuhn strained his hearing to listen to what was going on and why the first Grim had summoned every reaper. Being at the back with thousand of reapers in front of him, he couldn’t see what was happening at the front, but Kuhn couldn’t help but look around guiltily to see if any of the reapers sensed his impatience to leave and complete something he had started in secret.

’I must not let them know what I have done before I finish,’ Kuhn said to himself, not yet accustomed to being a reaper or realizing that there was no such thing as speaking to oneself in private. Whatever you say in your head would be heard by the next reaper standing nearby. He realized that too late when the reaper in front of him turned to look at him.

"What?" Kuhn asked, clutching his scythe tightly as he saw the eyes of the reaper glowing at him and looking at him suspiciously.

"Criminal, Kuhn. You have done something against law."

Everyone in this world already knew he was Astral’s pet, which naturally made them distrust him. Ever since he had become a reaper, many had labeled him untrustworthy, especially now, after Astral had been said to have been perished. Some had even said he would be next to perish, as a pet always follows its master’s lead and goes down the same path.

Every new reaper, wanting to be recognized for their duty and gain the favor of the elders, would find any little opportunity to be at the front, near the stronger reapers and the first Grim. Now that the reapers had all returned and stopped bringing back souls until orders were restored, they looked for other ways to be noticed. That was why, upon hearing what Kuhn, the pet of a treacherous reaper, had said, the reaper in front of him moved to the side where he could be seen before announcing,

"Kuhn has committed a crime!"

Every reaper’s head turned to look in Kuhn’s direction, and Kuhn fought the urge to run before they discovered what he had done, but he stood his ground as there was nowhere to escape. Unlike Astral, he couldn’t run to hide from punishment.

"Bring the reaper forward," said the second Grim. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
