Chapter 475: Run away

"The fifth room on the second floor, no one should go there until it’s safe. Especially you," Rohan said firmly. "He’s fighting the corruption, and any scent of flesh could tempt him. Be careful around him for now; he’s no longer the Rav you know, but a hungry savage."

With that, Rohan sped away to tend to Angel’s arm and then to deal with Cordelia, whom he had knocked out in his room.

He didn’t even know where his wife was, and the thought of not knowing was killing him from within. Where was she, and in what condition? The fact that she had been taken on the very day she was sick, and he hadn’t known, was more than he could handle. He was deeply disappointed in himself for not catching up fast enough.

He should have known when she stopped waiting for him to come back from the royal castle, no matter how late at night it was. He should have known when she no longer suffered from the intense cold that used to make her bundle up in layers of coats or wake in the middle of the night asking to be held in his warmth.

He should have fucking known he was living with an impostor when the spark in her hazel eyes stirred nothing in his heart when she looked at him. He had fucking let his wife down, and because of that, she was now held somewhere he didn’t even know. But then... this couldn’t have been possible unless Cordelia had used something on him.

No doubt Cordelia had used the help of another being. Knowing that not even a black witch’s spell could work on him because of his demon blood, Rohan was certain another demon had helped her. Suddenly everything became clear to him, and his jaw clenched tightly.

First, he needed to see to Angel himself, because not even Evenly, who was already emotionally unstable, could be there for his son. She was probably tearing herself apart with the thought of the person she loved dying. His family should be his responsibility, and his alone.

As much as Rohan wanted to hurry away and find his wife, he knew that if he gave in to the urge to think only of himself and what mattered most to his heart, he wouldn’t be forgiven for a third time by a son who trusted and looked up to him.

Rohan spent the next half hour tending to the unconscious Angel. He pressed on the bite to drain out any remaining bad blood and made several small cuts to check for signs of infection from the rogue’s venom. No one was immune to a rogue’s bite, and no creature could escape it, for as long as one had blood and a heart, they were never out of danger from turning rogue.

While purebloods were less likely to become rogues since they didn’t have functioning hearts, there had still been many cases of them turning as well. The ones most likely to be infected after a bite were creatures and people with beating hearts, and Angel had a heart, despite being part vampire. What had cured Rohan’s own corruption had been the effect of his new heart coming back into his body and cleansing it of all the tainted blood.

He hoped that cutting away the bite would work, but he would only know once Angel regained consciousness.

Rohan washed and cleaned the boy’s body, changed his clothes, and tucked him gently into bed. He looked down at the child, watching his chest rise and fall softly, and felt a stab of guilt hit him hard for everything the boy had been forced to endure.

He couldn’t even live with his real identity, his hair and eyes had to be altered. Sometimes Rohan wondered what life would have been like if they had just stayed behind in that mountain after Angel was born, never stepping back into this mess. They wouldn’t have been caught amidst any war or chaos; they would only have had to worry about their next meal and taking care of the animals.

Though they would have lived in fear of Belle being stuck in the land of the dead and him having no wealth and money to keep them stable... Rohan shut his eyes and pushed the thoughts away, knowing it wouldn’t have been possible for them to even remain there without leaving to find answers.

"I’ll be back before you wake up, son. I’m sorry for all the trouble you’ve had to go through since your birth. No child should have to go through all that." Staring at the boy’s pale, sleeping face, Rohan leaned down and kissed his forehead softly. "But I need to leave to find your mama."
