Chapter 398: Burnt_Part 2

"What do you think you are doing, my lady? Playing with fire inside a room where the desks are flammable. Are you crazy or—" she stopped when the other woman slammed the lamp to the floor and then lit the fire on the cloth.

Lady Althea gasped and prepared to leave the room to report the lady before she set them all on fire, but just as she moved, Jamie, who stood behind her, noticed how Belle was looking at him with a murderous eyes and knew she intended to burn him with the fire. He calculated her movement with his eyes, and when she threw the burning cloth, he pulled Lady Althea in front of him to protect himself.

Lady Althea was stunned to be pulled back when all she wanted was to escape the room. Before she knew what was happening, the burning cloth landed against her chest. The fire sparked and caught her hair that was let down over her shoulders. Before anyone knew what was happening, the lady had caught fire, and Jamie pushed her away from him before the fire could touch him instead of trying to put it out.

Lady Althea screamed, her husky voice that was always low now sounding loud enough to wake the dead as the fire began to consume her. She ran around the room and dashed out through the open door, running blindly without seeing where she was going as flames devoured her body, her screams echoing through the halls.

By the time she reached where people were, she had burned down to a level where she couldn’t be saved. She fell to the floor at the door leading to the hall, where people inside the ballroom were quick to notice the fire that had caught a curtain and the burning woman on the floor.

People began to scream at the sight of the fire, and immediately, efforts were made to put it out before it spread to all places. However, it was too late for the woman on the floor, as she had burned to the point of being unrecognizable.

"Wh-who is she? How did she catch fire?" people murmured in shock and horror as they began to gather around the burnt body, where smoke was rising and the body was twitching on the floor before it went completely still. Many cried out as they covered their noses with their handkerchiefs, trying not to breathe in the burning smoke.

"Who could have done this?"

"Go in the direction she came from and see who is there!" one of the nobles ordered, and men in palace guards uniforms rushed at once to obey.

Not long after, they reached the hall where the study room was, and immediately they heard a woman’s scream coming from that direction. They rushed in through the already opened door, only to find the Baron fighting with a woman, trying to pin her to the floor as she struggled fiercely beneath him. The room reeked of kerosene and was thick with smoke as the fire had already caught on a window curtain.

"Put out the fire before it spreads!" ordered one of the guards to his men, who rushed to begin pulling the curtains down and stepping on it to put out the fire.

"What’s going on in here, my lord?" One of the men asked.

"She has gone crazy. Hurry up and hold her down!" Jamie shouted to the guards who had come into the room. "She set Lady Althea on fire and wants to burn the palace to kill everyone!" he reported as the men obeyed at once and rushed to restrain the struggling lady on the floor.

At the same time, the guests crowded at the door, peering in. They all heard what Jamie said, the same Jamie who could have stopped the fire before it consumed the lady, but instead had let it happen, fearing he would lose his title if Althea told her father he wasn’t planning to remain faithful after marriage.

He didn’t want her to die, but if it was the only way for him to remain a Baron, he couldn’t help it. She had brought it upon herself.

However, the realization that the burned person in the hall was Lady Althea made everyone gasp in horror, and some women fell to their knees in tears. Lady Althea’s mother passed out immediately.

"God in heaven, she... she killed Lady Althea!"
