Moments ago, Deadeye had been full of smug confidence, but now he was running for his life as Mack barreled toward him like a raging bull. He cursed himself for not having more than two legs to escape faster.
"Are you not afraid the Medusa Gang will come after you, Hancock?!" Deadeye shouted, limping and scrambling away.
"Afraid, my a*s!"
Nearby, the Devil Guild members who had managed to find cover exchanged uneasy glances as they watched Deadeye being chased down.
"Should we, uh, help the chief out?" one of them hesitantly asked the group.
"Help? Chief's always been good to us—making us take all the dirty, dangerous jobs, screaming at us, even killing a few when he was in a bad mood. But you're right; we should definitely help. Why don't you go first? We'll be right behind you," another man replied, patting the first guy's shoulder encouragingly.
"On second thought, maybe this is fine as it is," the first man muttered, realizing the truth of his comrade's words. He sat down, watching Deadeye's desperate escape.
"You worthless fools!" Deadeye screamed as he saw his men huddled in safety, unwilling to come to his aid. "When I survive this, I'll kill every one of you and feed your bodies to the sharks!"
The man who had initially suggested helping Deadeye cast a thoughtful look at his companions and then picked up a rifle from the ground. "Maybe we shouldn't let him make it back alive?"
Mack swung again, and Deadeye dodged just in time, though this time, his arm was slashed to the bone.
"Come here, you snake! Let me put you out of your misery. I'll hold your memorial tablet and share the world with you after you're dead. How about that?"
Deadeye's face paled, despair flooding his eyes. But then, his hand brushed against something at his waist, and a savage grin spread across his face as he yelled, "You let me no choice, Hancock! I gave you a chance. Don't accuse me of being ruthless when you meet the king of hell!"
With a trembling hand, Deadeye drew a small revolver from his belt, aiming it at Mack. This was his trump card, a one-shot custom weapon he'd spent a fortune on, reserved for his showdown with the emissary. Now, it seemed it would have to be used on Mack instead.
