Within the walls of Everton, the rivalry between the Dornian trade delegation and the one led by Mortimer had reached a fever pitch. The latter was flooding the market with Montirian Ducats, so much so that some financial titans had wagered their entire fortunes on this gamble.
"Mr. Zedler, our Dornian Emerald reserves have dwindled to just 110 million. If we don't receive reinforcements soon, we expect to be completely out of Emeralds by tonight," Maurice anxiously reported as he found Mortimer in the midst of wrapping a bandage around his wrist.
Mortimer, however, showed no signs of worry. "There's almost thirty billion Dornian Emeralds in this. Take it," he said, his tone as relaxed as if he were offering mere pocket change as he calmly pulled out a card from his pocket.
Maurice stared at Mortimer in shock, unable to comprehend the ease with which Mortimer handled the situation. Dagnabbit, he's playing it cool.
Though Mortimer appeared composed on the surface, deep down, he was a bit thrilled. Is this what it feels like to be one of those domineering CEOs from the novels the kids read? Throwing around billions like it's spare change sure feels amazing!
The card, loaded with over 3 billion Dornian Emeralds, had been handed to Mortimer by Matthew before they set out. As for where it came from…
Mortimer recalled the smug expression on that young man's face.
"Mr. Larson, Mr. Larson, guess what I've got here?" Solon waved a bank card in front of Matthew, grinning from ear to ear.
"Your secret stash of cash, hidden from your wife?" Matthew's words caused Solon's grin to falter, embarrassment washing over his face.
"No way! I, Solon Durham, a man who stands tall and proud, would never hide money from my wife."
There was a clear lack of confidence in Solon's voice. After all, Enzo was still living out his retirement in a villa under Matthew's watch. Yet, Solon had gone behind his back, taking his men to clean out the old man's wealth. Everything that could be sold was sold, and everything that could be mortgaged was mortgaged. Everything Enzo once owned had vanished in the blink of an eye.
Regardless, Matthew solemnly accepted the bank card Solon handed over. "I appreciate your gesture. After this is over, every penny will be returned to you. I'll make sure of that."
If Enzo ever found out that Solon had raided his entire fortune with the help of the Martial League, he'd probably start by cursing Solon's ancestors and relatives before heading over to complain to Elara. At that point, no matter how understanding Elara might be, there would be a rift.
After all, raiding the family home was one thing, but giving it all away? Who could tolerate that?!
