Chapter 220
The first howl came just as the last rays of sunlight disappeared over the horizon. Elyra froze, her spoon halfway to her mouth as the haunting sound echoed through the forest.
Dain set his fork down, his muscles coiled like a predator ready to pounce. “Did you hear that?”
Elyra nodded slowly, her golden eyes darting to the window. “It sounded… close.”
Matthew glanced between them, his brow furrowed. “It’s probably just wolves. They’ve been coming down from the higher mountains lately.”
Elyra and Dain exchanged a look. This was no ordinary wolf.
That night, Elyra couldn’t sleep. She lay awake, staring at the ceiling, her heart racing every time the howl echoed through the forest.
Finally, she slipped out of bed and padded down the hall to Dain’s room. She found him sitting on the edge of his bed, fully dressed, his fists clenched.
“You’re not going out there,” she said firmly, closing the door behind her.
“I wasn’t planning to,” Dain shot back, but his tone betrayed him.
Elyra crossed her arms. “It’s dangerous, Dain. We don’t even know what’s out there.”
“That’s exactly why I need to see,” he argued, his orange eyes flashing. “What if it’s something connected to us? What if it knows what we are?”
“It’s right there,” he said through gritted teeth, his breath coming fast.
Elyra placed a hand on his arm, her touch grounding him. “We can’t. Not yet. Please.”
Dain clenched his jaw, his hand hovering over the doorknob. Finally, he stepped back, his whole body trembling with suppressed energy.
As the howl faded into the night, Elyra tightened her grip on his arm.
“We’ll figure it out,” she whispered. “But not like this.”
Dain nodded reluctantly, but the fire in his eyes didn’t dim.
