Chapter 12

Cassian’s gaze flicked between her and her mother, his eyes narrowing slightly as if assessing their sincerity. “Rogues are not easily trusted,” he said after a moment. “You’ll understand if I’m cautious.”

“Of course,” Aurora replied quickly. “We’re willing to do whatever is necessary to prove we mean no harm.”

Cassian studied her for another long moment before nodding. “You may stay for now, but understand that this is not a permanent arrangement. You will be expected to contribute to the pack and follow our rules. If you prove trustworthy, we can discuss a longer-term arrangement.”

Relief flooded through Aurora, and she inclined her head. “Thank you, Alpha.”

Cassian’s expression softened slightly. “One more thing,” he said, his tone firm but not unkind. “I would like to know your names. And… if there is anything you’re hiding, now is the time to say it.”

Her mother placed a hand on her shoulder, her expression thoughtful. “He seems like a good man,” Lila said quietly. “This pack… it’s different. Maybe this is where we can start over.”

Aurora nodded, though her mind was already racing. She had felt Cassian’s gaze on her, as though he had seen through her carefully constructed façade. The weight of her secret pressed heavily on her, a reminder that starting over was never as simple as it seemed.

For now, she would rest. Tomorrow, she would face whatever came next.
