I looked at Lisa, smiling as I took over the conversation from Brandon. "You're family, so it's different."
Lisa shot me a subtle glare, shoved the envelope into her pocket, and said, "Give me the envelopes. I'll make sure to distribute them to everyone later."
Brandon handed her the prepared envelopes. She took them, asking, "Are there any for the other departments?"
He and Logan exchanged a glance, chuckling. "Yes, every medical staff member here gets one."
Lisa gave him a thumbs-up. "You're really generous, Mr. Howell."
She left with the envelopes, and Logan checked the time. "If there's nothing else here, I'll head back."
"Sure! Merry Christmas!" Brandon wished him a happy holiday.
"Wishing your whole family a very Merry Christmas." Logan added a few extra words to his blessing, making both Brandon and me glance at the baby in the stroller.
From today onward, we were a family of three.
Logan followed Lisa as she handed out the envelopes to the nurses on duty. She conveyed Brandon's gratitude and extended Christmas greetings.
"Are you heading back?" he asked her.
"No, Maddie just gave birth, and there's still a lot to take care of. Plus, it's almost dawn," Lisa said, yawning.
Back in the resting room, Lisa sat down but didn't sleep right away. Instead, she spaced out for a while before taking off her coat. As she did, the envelopes in her pocket pressed against her palm. She took them out—there were five in total. Four from her grandparents and parents, and one from Logan.
The envelope from Logan was different from the other four. She didn't open the four but chose to open this unique one first. Inside, she found a card.
She remembered Logan saying it was a big gift, and it seemed he meant it—it was definitely too much to fit in an envelope.
That time, when she acknowledged Joelle, he had given her 999 dollars. She wondered how much this Christmas monetary gift would be. It probably wouldn't be more than that, though.
Lisa wasn't short on money, so she didn't think much of it. She casually stuffed the envelopes into her office drawer and then lay down on the bed.
She fell asleep and even had a dream. In the dream, she was lying on a delivery bed, sweating profusely and in pain. There was a man beside her, trying to comfort her, but she couldn't see his face. She was clutching his hand tightly and cursing, "Bastard! Logan, you jerk! You're making me hurt so much..."
