Just as she was about to turn back, Alison bumped straight into Maxwell.
"Alison, what did you just throw away?"
Having just returned from dinner with Bella, he seemed to be in a good mood. His lips curved into a slight smile as he casually glanced at the trash bin.
Alison looked at him calmly. "Just some garbage."
Maxwell didn't think much of it. Instead, he pulled her into his arms. "It's cold outside. Why aren't you wearing more layers?"
As he spoke, he quickly took off his suit jacket and draped it over her shoulders.
Alison was about to push it off when her hand accidentally brushed against his pocket, feeling a few pieces of strawberry candy inside.
Seeing the flicker of emotion in her eyes, Maxwell chuckled softly, a hint of helplessness in his tone. "Bella loves these, so I always keep some on me. She's got a sweet tooth—just like you used to."
As he spoke, he naturally took the candies and slipped them into the pocket of his dress pants.
Yes… she used to have a sweet tooth too.
Back then, he always kept various snacks in his suit pocket—especially her favorite lemon candies.
Even when his friends teased him about it, he never minded. In fact, he wore it as a badge of pride.
"I have a girlfriend, and I love spoiling her. Do you?" he would say with a smirk.
But at some point… the lemon candies had been replaced with strawberry ones.
Alison curled her lips slightly but said nothing. She simply turned and walked home in silence.
The next morning, Alison and Maxwell had breakfast together.
The housekeeper, smiling warmly, couldn't help but ask, "Miss White, did you have a good time celebrating your anniversary yesterday?"
At her words, Maxwell's body visibly stiffened.
It was as if he had only just now remembered—yesterday was their anniversary.
His expression faltered, and a trace of guilt flashed across his face. "I'm so sorry, Alison. Work was overwhelming yesterday… I completely forgot."
Alison didn't expose his lie. She simply replied softly, "It's okay."
Her calm reaction only deepened Maxwell's guilt. He immediately got up and called his assistant.
"Cancel all my meetings for today."
Then, lowering his voice, he spoke a few more instructions into the phone before hanging up.
Turning back to her, he said gently, "Alison, I'll make up for it today. You've always wanted to watch a meteor shower, right? I'll take you."
He didn't give her a chance to refuse—everything was already arranged.
The mountain road was adorned with warm, glowing lights, stretching all the way to the top, making it look as if stars had descended into the valley.
At the summit, countless freshly flown-in flowers covered the area, and in the center stood a long dining table, flickering candlelight casting a romantic glow over a carefully prepared feast.
The wind lifted the edges of the white tablecloth, the entire scene exuding elegance and romance.
It was clear that Maxwell had put great effort into planning this.
And yet—
Alison's face held no trace of a smile.
Maxwell didn't seem to notice.
She had randomly sent a picture of a stray kitten, and he had responded, "So well-behaved, just like you—adorable."
She had excitedly sent a selfie of herself drinking bubble tea, "Found a super delicious one! Look!"
And his reply?
A string of stickers followed by, "Little glutton, what kind of bubble tea? I'll write it down in my notes and buy it for you next time."
At that, Alison tapped into his notes.
Once upon a time, there had only been one file there—one that contained all of her preferences.
But now, a second file had appeared.
It was filled with meticulous details about Bella.
Every tiny preference.
Her grip on his phone tightened unconsciously.
Just then, another message from Bella popped up:
"Maxwell, I miss you so much."
Hearing footsteps approaching, Alison quickly turned off the screen and handed the phone back to him.
"Your phone kept buzzing just now," she said calmly.
Maxwell hesitated for a brief moment, his gaze scrutinizing her expression. Seeing nothing unusual, he took the phone.
As soon as he saw Bella's message—"I miss you."—his expression stiffened ever so slightly.
