“It was me, Dad,” Paxton said, his voice thick with anguish. He held up his phone, where the same horrific video was still playing.

“Someone sent this to me, Dad. Look!” he cried, his voice trembling. “When I saw this, my heart broke! My beloved wife, subjected to such inhuman torture!”

His voice rose with fury. “I had to expose that monster Larissa in front of everyone! How could her heart be so twisted? To kidnap her own mother and abuse her so cruelly! Dad, can you really trust the family fortune to a beast who would do this? Aren’t you afraid she’ll do the same to you one day?”

Before Paxton could finish, Kiernan’s hand struck his face in a resounding slap.

Josette chimed in, “He’s right, Dad. If you were giving them a chance, you would have at least left them with something, not handed the entire fortune to a young girl. You were obviously trying to push Paxton and his family to their breaking point.”

She had learned her lesson. Until she was certain Paxton’s plan would succeed, she would pin all the blame on his side of the family.

“Kiernan, was one slap really enough?” Haskell remarked coolly. “He did ruin Larissa’s birthday, after all.”

Kiernan raised his hand again, but Paxton caught his wrist. “Dad, even after all this, you still side with that wretched girl.”
