As soon as the words left her mouth, Sapphira realized something was terribly wrong. The man in the driver’s seat was not her regular driver. It was a different, vaguely familiar face.
It was Gareth, the former steward from Paxton’s side of the family, the one Larissa had fired.
A chill ran down Sapphira’s spine.
“Gareth, what is this? What are you doing?” she demanded, her voice sharp with alarm. While she questioned him, she secretly tried to dial her husband, Neville.
But just as her finger hovered over the call button, the car screeched to a halt, throwing her forward. Her phone flew from her hand and clattered to the floor.
“Don’t bother, Madam,” Gareth’s voice came from the front. “I chose a spot with no signal.”
Sapphira righted herself and looked out the window. Night had fallen, and they were parked in a desolate, rundown part of the city, surrounded by darkness and silence.
“Gareth, do you have any idea what you’re doing?” Sapphira said, forcing herself to remain calm. “I am the first lady of the Judson family. If my husband finds out you’ve kidnapped me, you know what will happen to you. Turn this car around right now and let me go, and I can pretend this never happened.”
She quickly deduced that Gareth was likely seeking revenge on Larissa and was using her as leverage. That meant he wouldn’t harm her, not yet. He needed her as a hostage.
“Gareth, if it’s money you want, I can give it to you,” she said calmly.
Gareth parked the car, then turned around, his face grim. “Of course I want money, Madam! But I also want revenge on that little bitch Larissa!”
