Vivica’s cry drew the attention of the remaining guests.
Honora, who was now more lucid, instinctively touched her face. She gasped and snatched her hand away as if she’d been burned. Her skin… it felt rough and bloated. It used to be so smooth and delicate, but now it felt like she was touching raw pork.
“My God, if I didn’t know it was Honora, I wouldn’t recognize her. How did her face get so swollen?”
“It must be the poison.”
“I wonder if the swelling will go down. What if it’s permanent? That would be horrifying.”
Hearing the whispers about her appearance, Honora panicked.
“Mom, give me a mirror…” she pleaded.
Vivica frowned, a hint of disgust in her eyes. “Honora, maybe you shouldn’t look just yet. I’m afraid you’ll frighten yourself.”
A cold dread washed over Honora. What had happened to her face?
The doctor glanced at Honora before addressing Vivica. “The poison was in her system for too long and had already spread to her head. Although I did my best to neutralize it, my skills are no match for Ms. Judson’s. There will be serious side effects from the residual toxins. The swelling is just one of them. She will likely experience intermittent numbness in her legs as well. We will need to monitor her for further complications.”
“Doctor, will my daughter’s face ever go back to normal?” Vivica asked desperately.
