Haskell’s voice cut through the air again.
“Stop. Don’t say another word. You’re contaminating the air.”
Larissa nearly burst out laughing. Did Haskell really have to be so brutal when Honora had worked so hard to set the mood?
Honora fell silent again. After a long moment, she spoke, her voice strained with embarrassment.
“Believe me or not, Haskell, I’ve said what I needed to say. I don’t know if you’ve accepted Larissa out of necessity, but I don’t mind. If you ever change your mind, I’ll be waiting for you. I won’t disturb you any longer. I’m leaving now.”
“Good.”
There was a soft rustling sound, and then the line cleared.
“Did you hear that?” Haskell’s pleasant voice came through.
Larissa grinned. “I heard.”
“Are you happy?”
“Very.”
“Good.”
“I never knew you had it in you,” Larissa teased.
“Just wanted to give you a little entertainment for the drive. Didn’t want you to get bored.”
Larissa’s smile widened. “Well, it worked. I was thoroughly entertained. Feel free to do it again sometime.”
“No, I hope there won’t be a next time,” Haskell said, his voice laced with a deadpan seriousness. “I wasn’t kidding. Her words were genuinely polluting my ears.”
“If she has any self-awareness, she won’t try that again,” Larissa said.
