“Dad, just listen to Sapphira and Larissa! Can you even believe the things they’re saying?” Vivica’s face was flushed with rage, her chest heaving. She was so furious she felt a blood vessel might pop.
Larissa shot back without missing a beat, “You act like monsters, so why would my mother and I bother speaking to you like humans?”
Vivica’s eyes widened in fury. She jabbed a finger at Larissa and yelled, “Sapphira used to be such a gentle person! Now you’ve corrupted her and turned her into this unreasonable shrew!”
“I was gentle because I didn’t want to fight with you,” Sapphira retorted. “But now I see what a vicious, heartless family you are. You were probably thrilled that Neville and I didn’t have children, thinking it meant we wouldn’t compete for the inheritance. But now that Larissa is our daughter—and a brilliant one at that—she’s a threat to you, and you can’t stand it.”
“That’s a vile lie!” Vivica’s denial lacked conviction, but she pressed on shamelessly. “Sapphira, I’ve always felt terrible that you and Neville couldn’t have children. I was more heartbroken than you were!”
“Oh, really?” Sapphira scoffed, cutting through the pretense. “Weren’t you the one who always called me a barren hen behind my back?”
Vivica was stunned into silence. Before she could muster a defense, Paxton stepped in. “Enough. Let’s not get sidetracked. We’re here to talk about the car crash.”
As if waking from a dream, Vivica snapped back to the matter at hand. “Right! I didn’t come here to argue with you! My son, Leopold, was seriously injured because Larissa crashed into him. He’s still in a coma, and the doctors don’t even know if he’ll wake up! So, one way or another, Larissa is going to give us a satisfactory explanation today. If she can’t, I swear I’ll make her pay in blood!”
