Rita’s POV
Since those three returned from Paradise Port, they had been silent. I had not heard anything from them. And I thought they would come straight to my house to bother me about what I did to that little rat. But it was better this way, better that they did not mess with me.
Today was the divorce hearing, finally I would get rid of that annoying Orlando and take half of everything he had, because I was not stupid, I married with shared assets. When we got married, he wanted to keep our assets separate, but I made a scene and swore that if it was not done my way, I would disappear with the girl. He was still crying over his other daughter and ended up giving in to everything I wanted. Other daughter... ah, if he only knew...
I arrived at the courthouse at the time of the hearing, and Orlando was already there. He looked at me with disgust, but I ignored it. The judge called us, we entered the room and sat face to face. The judge asked if there was any possibility of reconciliation, and we said no in unison. Orlando barely looked at me. I wanted to laugh in that idiot's face, but I could not. Then the judge said we should proceed with the division of assets, and Orlando's lawyer handed him the documents with the list of assets we should divide.
"Very well, according to what is stated here, Orlando, you own the house where Rita lives, a car, and this amount of one hundred and fifty thousand in the bank. And Rita owns a car. How will you proceed with the division, will it be amicable?"
"Wait a minute!" I spoke up immediately, no way he was going to trick me. "He still had the farm and the dairy business. He is hiding assets."
"Actually, I do not, Rita." He faced me with the hint of a smile. "The farm, the dairy business, and everything else was my father's property, and he left a will that was executed and not contested. Everything belongs to Cam and Manuela."
"What are you saying? I was there, I heard the reading of the will. Your father left you thirty percent of everything," I complained, and he laughed.
"Mrs. Rita Menezes Blanco, according to the documents Mr. Orlando Blanco has given me, including his father's will, he really has nothing more than the house, the car, and the money in a bank account," the judge said, and I turned my eyes to him.
"You see, Rita, my father specified that part of the will should only be read after Manuela reached legal age and only in the presence of his heirs, who were Cam, Manuela, and me. Did you forget about that?" Orlando was smiling.
Damn! I had forgotten. But the old man could not have taken back what he had already left. Or could he?
"But you had a small part of the company," I complained.
"Ah, that. I sold it to Cam and Manuela, at the same time as the will reading. It made no sense for me to have a small part of their company, besides I needed money to fund your luxuries. That is why I have this money in the bank, it is what is left from selling my part of the company. Other than that, I live on my salary, which pays the bills and your luxuries, which have already consumed a good part of the money I received from selling my share in the company." Orlando was calm, with the tranquility of someone who had done everything right.
I looked at the lawyer beside me as he examined the documents that Orlando's lawyer had submitted to the judge.
"Yes, Rita, that's correct." The lawyer I had hired to defend my interests was agreeing with this absurdity. "Orlando has renounced his entire inheritance in favor of his children Cam and Manuela and sold what little he had of the company. Everything is properly documented and done within the law."
"But we're married. I should have signed for him to do this," I protested.
"Not for renouncing the inheritance. As for selling his share in the company, you gave him power of attorney when you got married to manage the company, which allowed him to make the sale," the lawyer reminded me. I had done that because I didn't want to be bothered with company matters, but I never thought he could sell it.
"What did you say?" I glared at Orlando furiously. "You can't do this!"
"I can! I did it because I could. It was my father's wish, and I fulfilled it," Orlando said confidently.
"Your Honor, I don't mind giving her the house and one of the cars, but I want to keep my car and the money," Orlando said.
My lawyer pulled me aside and whispered in my ear that it was a good offer and that I should accept it since the house was worth good money.
"Fine, I'll take the house and my car, you can keep that old car of yours and the money," I agreed. "And how much will my alimony be?"
"Your Honor, my client is not willing to pay alimony. They have no minor children, and Julian lives with his mother and doesn't study, besides not even being my client's son. As for Manuela, she studies but works and doesn't live with her mother. Rita is a perfectly healthy woman capable of working to provide for herself. And let's not disregard the fact that she was unfaithful," Orlando's lawyer said, and the judge agreed.
"No, absolutely not!" I completely lost my patience and raised my voice. "I've been married to you for almost twenty years, and during that time, I didn't need to work, and I'm not willing to..."
"It's not about what you're willing to do!" The judge spoke louder than me. "But rather what the law dictates, and in this case, Orlando is right. Therefore, it is determined that he will not pay alimony."
"But how will I pay the bills?" I looked at Orlando desperately.
"Well, Rita, like everyone else, by working!" Orlando laughed.
At the end of that hearing, I left the courthouse divorced, with a house and a car I couldn't afford to maintain, and no money in my pocket. My hatred for that family reached unimaginable levels. I would destroy them where it would hurt the most. I was going to destroy that little rat Manuela.
