Manuela’s POV
It was already Sunday afternoon, and I still had not touched the diary again. The day before, my family went out and returned home quite late, giving Flavian and me some time alone. Flavian eventually convinced me to put everything aside for a while and enjoy my family's visit, as they would be returning to our city by the end of the day. He gathered all those things and stored them away, saying we would have a peaceful Sunday. But it wasn't quite so peaceful.
Melissa had called the day before, and after a long conversation and my assurance that I was fine despite the shock, she said she would come to see me on Sunday, as she also wanted to see Olivia. Rick and Lexie came over for lunch, and she charmed my father with her cheerful personality. In the middle of the afternoon, Melissa and Fred joined us, and shortly after they arrived, the doorbell rang again, and Flavian went to answer it.
"Everyone, this is Breno, the police officer who's helping us," Flavian announced as he entered the living room with a tall man in his early thirties who looked tired. Flavian introduced each of us.
"I'm sorry for coming on Sunday, but I was on my way back and wanted to tell you what happened at the police station," Breno apologized and sat where Flavian indicated.
Breno began his account of everything that happened and his conversation with this Gisele woman. She seemed to be a horrible person. When he mentioned that she had called Rita and showed the noted phone number, my father sank dejectedly into the sofa.
"My God, what kind of demon did I marry?" My father was very upset, and rightfully so; there was nothing we could say to console him.
"I always said that woman was a demon!" Olivia exclaimed in such a funny way that made us laugh.
"What else, Breno?" Flavian returned to the subject.
"She confirmed that the other woman, whose delivery she also attended that day, did have twins. But that's all she said. She left that woman's house and went to your farm," Breno confirmed.
"So she did leave the first house with one of the babies," Flavian concluded.
"That must be it, but she didn't confirm it and wouldn't say what she did with that child. She also didn't say a word about what happened at the farm. After her lawyer arrived, she clammed up and didn't say anything else. I tried talking to him, to learn something, but he's a strange fellow. The detective said he's a lawyer from town, but not the most honest type," Breno explained. "But Gisele said she can't tell what happened because if she does, she'll lose a source of income she needs now."
"So I could be the daughter of that woman who had twins," I sighed disheartedly.
"Look, Manuela, that might be true, but there's another possibility I've been thinking about during these hours I spent at the police station," Breno had a theory, and I really wanted to hear it. I sat on the edge of the sofa and focused on him.
"You always have one more theory to complicate the investigations," Flavian laughed.
"No, but this one is simple. If Rita wasn't really pregnant, she needed a baby. I thought maybe Gisele took the first child to give to Rita," Breno pointed out.
"Yes, that's what it looks like," Flavian agreed.
"But what if Orlando had asked for a DNA test? It would come back negative, and Rita wouldn't achieve her goal," Breno had a point; it was a possibility. "Did you mention DNA at any point, sir?"
"Actually, yes. The last time I visited Rita to bring her money and check on the pregnancy. She was unbearable, complaining that I couldn't leave her in that situation and demanding that I divorce and marry her. She even suggested that my wife had cheated on me and the child was another man's..." My father looked at Breno with wide eyes. "It can't be."
"You're right, Flavian," my father agreed. "Maybe it's time to exhume the bodies I buried."
Fred called his uncle, and two hours later, Dr. Molina was in the living room, accompanied by a nurse, collecting our genetic material. My father insisted on taking the test as well, so our samples could be compared and I would have no more doubts. While the tube was filling with my blood, I could feel hope growing inside me.
"How long until we get the results, doctor?" I asked anxiously.
"Well, Manu, the test between you and your father will be ready in fifteen days, but the one between you and Cam will take forty-five days. Each test is done differently and takes its time. Unfortunately, there's no way to speed up this process," Dr. Molina explained, and I deflated—it was such a long time. I would be anxious, there was no way around it.
"But sweetie, if you're my daughter, there are only two possible mothers: either Rita, which I highly doubt, but there's already a test being done, or my first wife," my father tried to cheer me up.
"Okay, fifteen days then," I said to myself.
In the early afternoon, everyone left, including my family, leaving just Flavian, Lexie, and me. I was tired but too restless—I needed to finish reading that diary. After Lexie went to bed, I asked Flavian for the diary to finish my reading.
"Don't you want to rest and leave this for tomorrow?" Flavian asked.
"I can't wait another day to find out who Julian's father is!" I explained, and he laughed, going to get what I had asked for.
