Irresistible Boss Succumbing to Your Touch (Maria Anita) novel Chapter 3

Breno’s POV

I watched Gisele as she talked on the phone, and without a doubt, she was a cunning criminal full of tricks. I cannot deny that curiosity was eating away at me. Who could she have called? My bet was that she was warning this Rita person about a police officer's sudden interest in past events, but I could not be certain since she had used an old telephone, the kind that did not even have redial capability. I was surprised that thing still worked.

As soon as she left the room, I expressed my curiosity to the detective.

"I am wondering who this woman called," I said, still looking at the door.

"My friend, this little woman is quite the shady character. She thinks she is very clever, but she forgot she is in a police station. I also want to know if she called any accomplices." The detective smiled and walked to the desk.

The detective opened the top drawer and beckoned me over. There was a caller ID device that he explained was connected to the phone and recorded both incoming and outgoing call numbers. It was something as simple and old as the telephone on the desk. It was not the most proper way to obtain information, probably even unethical, but it would serve my purpose well enough, after all, this Gisele was not exactly a person attached to morality, let's say, and I just wanted to know who she had called.

The detective fiddled with the device and wrote down the number on a piece of paper. I looked carefully and copied it into my phone's notepad.

"This area code is from the city where she used to live. I think I know who she called." I looked at the detective, who pulled a cell phone from the drawer and turned it on.

"Let's confirm your suspicions then." He dialed the number and put it on speakerphone.

"Hello," a woman with a strong voice, sounding ill-tempered, answered.

"Who is this?" The detective asked in a gentle voice.

"Rita. Who's calling?" She was not friendly at all.

"Rita? Are you Maria's sister?" The detective could not contain himself.

"No. I don't know any Maria, goodbye." She was ready to hang up.

"But isn't this the Castle residence?" The detective persisted.

"No, this is the Blanco residence," she was impatient.

"Do you have the Castles' number?" This man had a somewhat childish sense of humor - the more he annoyed Rita, the bigger his smile grew.

"I don't even know them, son. Now leave me alone, I've got things to do." And she hung up the phone.

"Was your hunch right?" He asked, laughing at the grumpy woman who had answered the phone.

"Bingo!" I said and smiled with him.

"So our target called an old acquaintance and asked her to find her a lawyer," he twirled his pen on the desk while thinking, "Could she be in that contributor database?"

"No, I already checked, but Rita's name isn't in there," I commented.

"But that file shows the names of the 'patients,' as Gisele likes to call the women who seek her services, and Rita was never Gisele's 'patient.' We'll probably find the deceased's name in there." The detective's reasoning made sense.

"Yeah, could be. I hadn't thought of that." I looked at him and walked toward the computer.

I had only searched for Rita's name and was looking through the "VIP Patients" folders chronologically from newest to oldest until I came across Sabrina Teles's file. After that, the detective had Gisele brought in, and I didn't finish reviewing the archive.

"Curiosity killed the cat," she sketched a smile.

"Gisele, I am not here as a police officer. But I would really like to know what happened to that woman and her baby."

"Why the interest in this woman? It was a long time ago, you were probably just a teenager back then." She stood up and walked to the bars.

"I heard the story and became interested."

"Just like that? Don't underestimate me, officer. I am not stupid. I might be many things, but stupid is not one of them." She narrowed her eyes to observe me.

"I was moved by the story of the mother who still swears she had twins. Everyone thinks she went crazy," I spoke and shrugged, I would not reveal my real motives.

"No, she is not crazy," Gisele laughed. "You know, officer, I used to make some money helping those people who lived far from town. I had an old car and went everywhere. But I did not like living in that middle of nowhere and knew that sooner or later the doctor would discover me. Then I received an offer, and the money I got to do what I did was enough for me to leave there and start a business here, in a bigger city, where I could earn much more. And that is what I did. And I made a lot of money all these years."

"That much?" I doubted, because although she lived well, she did not lead a luxurious life to say she made a lot of money. Which also did not match with her blackmailing.

"A lot. But you know how it is, in this kind of life, we need to pay many people to keep their mouths shut, many others for information, and fake documents are also expensive." She had started talking and when she realized it, she began to laugh. "Look at that, I am already making confessions to you."

"Gisele, you are smart and know that I am not your problem, the things I want to know would not change anything in your life here. Why won't you tell me?" I insisted.

"Because if I tell you, I lose a good source of income, and now that I am locked up, and it seems I will be here for a while, I need her to keep doing things for me." Gisele smiled and closed up again.

The officer watching the cell block called me and informed me that her lawyer had arrived. My time was up.
