That night, Yanis didn't sleep soundly. The strange and vivid dreams from before were like a floodgate suddenly opened, rushing in all at once. When she woke up from the dreams, Yanis was drenched in sweat. There was no sign of Zane beside her.
Lying on the bed, Yanis felt dazed for a moment. Her hand involuntarily rested on her abdomen, and the fluttering sensation in her chest gradually calmed.
The bizarre scenes from those dreams contained images that would linger in her mind for a lifetime. The child who was just one step away from entering this world, and the child who came unexpectedly but couldn't be a part of this world.
They stood before her, holding hands, waving gently at her.
"Mom, see you later."
Tears welled up in Yanis' eyes as she thought about it.
For a while, Yanis didn't move, her hand still on her abdomen, earnestly trying to sense the lives within.
Two vibrant lives.
In the following days, Yanis continued to dream of that scene. And that phrase, "Mom, see you later."
These days, Yanis had been busy running around with Bonnie. She only had the chance to meet Zane during breakfast and before sleeping at night.
On the day of Yanis' prenatal check-up, she didn't eat anything before leaving in the morning to go to the hospital with Zane.
Anticipating a crowd, Zane had Albi come an hour earlier to register and queue up.
By the time Yanis and Zane arrived, there were still two people ahead of Yanis.
Dr. Watson, the one who had examined Yanis before, was the one assisting her again.
"How are you feeling now?" Dr. Watson asked in a hushed voice, glancing at Yanis' abdomen.
Yanis answered truthfully, "I'm feeling okay for now, just like before, nothing uncomfortable."
"For the first trimester, it's normal. Once that's over, you might find it a bit more challenging, especially with twins," Dr. Watson explained while filling out the examination form for Yanis. "After the tests are done, bring the results to me."
Yanis nodded, "Alright, thank you."
"This is all part of my duty, no need to thank me," Dr. Watson handed the form to Yanis. "Did you come alone today?"
"I came with Zane. He's waiting outside," Yanis replied.
Dr. Watson nodded, "Alright, then I won't take you inside. There are a few other pregnant women waiting."
Yanis got up, "No need. You're busy. I'll come find you later."
"Sure," Dr. Watson acknowledged.
Carrying the form, Yanis found Zane outside, paid the fees, and then proceeded to queue for the various tests.
By the time she completed all the tests, it was already noon.
"Zane, I'm so hungry," Yanis said to Zane as she came out of the examination room, unable to suppress her hunger any longer.
Mr. Lawrence glanced at the time, "Give the form to Dr. Watson, then I'll take you for lunch."
Yanis nodded, "I heard their heartbeats just now. So loud, like the sound of galloping horses."
As they walked and talked, they accidentally bumped into someone.
Zane instinctively reached out to steady Yanis, who was apologizing to the person.
"I'm sorry, are you okay?"
The person stumbled and fell to the ground, their face turning pale.
Albi answered quickly on the other end, "Mr. Lawrence?"
"Do you know Ruth's boyfriend's number?"
Zane got straight to the point as soon as Albi picked up.
Albi was accustomed to frequently interacting with Ruth in the company, and their relationship was quite good. If Ruth did have a boyfriend, Albi would probably know about it.
However, Albi's response was surprising, "Ms. Walpole's boyfriend? But she doesn't have a boyfriend."
Albi had indeed interacted closely with Ruth, and he was confident he would know if she had a boyfriend. But he had no idea about Ruth having a boyfriend.
Even more so, he hadn't seen Ruth getting close to any man.
Zane didn't expect this outcome. "Ruth is pregnant and currently in the hospital."
Upon hearing this, Albi was shocked, "She's pregnant?!"
Albi's reaction was too astonished, as if he were caught off guard or knew something.
"Do you know the reason?" Zane asked.
Albi hesitated for a moment before explaining the situation to Zane.
Last month, Albi and Ruth had met with a CEO they had frequently collaborated with. That CEO's flight was delayed on his return from abroad, so Albi and Ruth arrived at the restaurant early. The CEO asked his son to meet with them in his stead.
The son was well-spoken and mannerly at first, but after a few rounds of drinks, he became less talkative. However, he became more talkative with Ruth, even pulling her aside to chat.
At that time, Albi received a call from home and left the restaurant briefly. When he returned, both
Ruth and the CEO's son were gone.
