The Regent's Table was an upscale restaurant. Elmer and Niamh had been waiting in a private room for about ten minutes when his parents arrived. It had been so many years that Niamh barely recognized them at first, but Elmer's mother, Hester Joan, still carried the same imperious air, and she was dressed in the height of fashion.
"Mr. and Mrs. White, it's been a long time," Niamh greeted them politely.
"Mm," Hester Joan replied, her eyes scanning Niamh from head to toe in a clear, assessing manner. She seemed somewhat satisfied with the respectable and modest dress Niamh was wearing.
"Dad, Mom, please sit down," Elmer said, pulling out chairs for Zachary White and Hester.
The waiter came to take their order. Elmer let his parents choose first, then turned to Niamh. "Nia, what would you like to eat?"
"I'll have whatever," she said. In this environment, she truly could eat anything, because she had no appetite at all.
"Niamh, don't be so formal. Just pretend you're having dinner with family," Zachary said kindly, but his words only made Niamh feel more constrained.
The situation improved slightly once the food arrived. Elmer chatted casually with his parents while Niamh focused on her food, eating in silence.
"Niamh..." Suddenly, Hester addressed her directly. Niamh looked up to find Hester staring at her intently, as if she had something on her face. "You and my son... how far have things progressed?"
"Mom!" Elmer exclaimed.
"You stay out of this," Hester shot back, glaring at her son.
