The words escaped her lips before she could stop them. She knew it was a venomous thing to say, but she couldn't help it. On the beach that day, it seemed Jonathan and she had cleared up their past misunderstandings, yet she found it even harder to forgive him. She would rather Jonathan have genuinely fallen in love with Marina than for his preference for Marina to be a case of mistaken identity. It made her feel as if Jonathan had never even truly loved the Rina from the Juvenile Rehabilitation Center. Otherwise, how could he have gotten them confused? Worse, it made all the suffering and heartache she had endured seem utterly ridiculous.
Especially now… now the Thomases, who had never given her a second thought, were all hoping she would remarry Jonathan. What did that make her? A convenient tool to be used whenever needed? Niamh felt a headache coming on.
"I will not remarry you," she said to the unconscious man, knowing full well he couldn't hear her, but her voice was firm and resolute. Even if she had been the one he loved all along—she didn't want to love him again.
The night was as black as ink.
Blackspire.
The Vipers' Nest.
Joker lost a hand of cards and nearly pulled his gun on one of his subordinates. The man obediently handed over his money, but the murderous aura around Joker didn't fade. Everyone in The Vipers' Nest knew that their second-in-command was in a very bad mood because he wasn't allowed to go out.
Drake had ordered Joker to stay inside the gang's headquarters. This had been going on for several days. It wasn't a punishment; Drake was keeping him under lockdown for his own safety. A lot of people were looking for Joker—Interpol, private investigators, men sent by Jonathan, and even forces from the Quinn family of Coralis. If The Vipers' Nest didn't hold some sway in Blackspire, Joker would have been found long ago.
"I'm just asking you to lay low for a while, not locking you up for life… They're watching closely now, but I'm sure they'll give up soon enough," Drake said, coming over to console him. "But the people you've pissed off this time are no small fry! You've got the Thomas family from Aldonia and the Quinn family from Coralis after you…"
Joker just laughed, toying with the gun in his hand. "And I haven't even truly wronged them yet!" Not until he killed that woman, anyway.
