Niamh really was thoughtful. Even after divorcing him, even after she had stopped loving him, she still didn’t want to see him ridiculed. Jonathan’s heart began to beat a little faster.
Inside Elixir & Co., the hall was filled with lavishly dressed guests. Chloe was hosting a reception on the first floor, inviting everyone to sample her company's wellness products.
A waiter carrying a tray of drinks nearly stumbled into Niamh, but Jonathan acted instantly, pulling her by the hand and into his arms. The sight was like a nail driving into the eyes of several onlookers.
“Nia!” Elmer White strode over and slapped Jonathan’s hand away. The sting on Jonathan's hand was sharp, a clear sign of Elmer’s fury.
“I didn’t know Ms. Fontaine had invited you,” Elmer said.
“Yes, I didn’t know you were coming either,” Niamh replied honestly. Elmer wasn’t aware that she was a biological daughter of the Quinn family. Chloe was close with the Quinns, so she would have been invited even if she weren’t the new head of The Thomas Group.
Elmer was attending on behalf of his organization, which was why he hadn't asked Niamh to be his date. He already knew about Jonathan’s new role as Niamh’s assistant and had cursed him under his breath for being so relentlessly persistent.
Elmer naturally placed a hand on Niamh’s back, guiding her toward Chloe to exchange pleasantries. Jonathan was left to trail behind them like a lackey, watching their retreating figures walk side by side.
“I never thought I’d see the day.”
Jonathan turned at the sound of the voice to see Michael Burton approaching, pushing his gold-rimmed glasses up his nose. The schadenfreude on Michael's face was unmistakable, but Jonathan seemed unbothered.
“I’m quite happy with how things are. I even get a salary of twenty-five hundred a month.”
Michael blinked at Jonathan’s response, then waved his hand dismissively. “You misunderstand… when I said ‘see the day,’ I wasn’t talking about you being an assistant.”
