The next day, I called my supervisor. His voice was both surprised and excited, “Marlene, are you sure you want to join the field survey team and go into the mountains? This field survey will last for a year. Can your family agree to it?” 

I had mentioned to Brennan before that I wanted to join the mentor’s group, but Brennan strictly 

forbade me from going with them. 

And at that time, I couldn’t bear to leave him either, so I declined the invitation from the mentor. 

Brennan repeatedly emphasized that I was not allowed to leave his side, so it was a surprise to the 

mentor when I volunteered to join. 

“Teacher, I was already an adult and could make decisions for myself. Moreover, you are also 

aware of my family situation, and I don’t want to cause any more trouble for the Krueger family elders. So, for this time, I kindly request that you keep my joining a secret until we depart.” 

My mentor has always cared for and looked after me, and I couldn’t let him struggle in the middle. 

There are only seven days left until departure, and once Brennan realizes that I have already left,

The location of this field survey was confidential. Although we could occasionally contact the

And Brennan might not even care where I went, my departure was also a relief for him. 

My departure, just happened to fulfill him and Brittany, he should feel fortunate without my 

entanglement. 

While Brennan was away at work during the day, I packed up all the things I needed to bring with

Just last time when I mentioned about going into the mountains, Brennan took away my ID card, so 

I had to go to the police station urgently to apply for a new one. 

These past few days, I have been at home just like usual. Whenever Brennan comes back home, I hide in my room, trying my best to avoid running into him. 

Although I wasn’t angry this time, I still had to pretend to be mad at him like before, so as not to arouse his suspicion.

In the afternoon, Brennan came back early from the company.

When Brennan entered the living room, I heard him asking the aunt to bring him some fever medicine and a cup of warm water, and then he shouted upstairs, “Marlene, come here.”
