His Ex-wife Is An Heiress novel Chapter 44

With a few more hours spent comforting Bethany and promising her that Her scumbag husband, Jason, was going to get what he deserved, Amara returned home.

However, the moment she opened the door and walked in, she was surprised to see Melanie on the couch, sucking face with some unknown guy.

“Oh God,” She quickly covered her eyes and turned away, thankfully, gaining the attention of the two on the couch.

“Mara, you’re back? What happened to golfing?” Melanie asked as she shoved her partner away, much to his displeasure.

“I uh… Finished early and…did I…interrupt something? I can leave if I-“

“No, not at all,” Melanie shoved the man once again, this time around it was off the chair and onto his foot. “We were just about wrapping up.” She turned to her partner and shooed him off. “You can leave.”

The guy looked reluctantly. “But Mel,” He tried protesting.

“I said you can leave, can’t you see my friend is here. Now, leave.”

Hearing the sharpness in her tone, the man knew better than to stay and complain. He grabbed his jacket and shoes grumbling and glaring at Amara as he stalked towards the door.

“Is he…who is he?” Amara asked.

“Just one of them guys I picked up from the club, why’d you ask?”

Amara glanced back at the door. She stared for a moment longer, trying to figure out why the guys face had seemed so familiar for some reason. After a few seconds, she shook her head.

“Nothing, I was just curious.”

Melanie grinned. “Curious eh?” She winked but before she could say anything more, Amara gave her a look that indicated that she’d best put whatever joke she’s currently brewing, to rest.

And just that, Melanie did.

She waited until Amara had poured herself a glass of water before she began speaking again. “I’m sorry you had to see that.”

“It’s not your fault.” Amara assured. “Now that I think about it, I think I’ve over stayed my welcome. You’ve houses me for nearly two months and I’ve been imposing on you all that time, perhaps I should move out.”

“Honesty,” She began. “I don’t think I can find happiness. Perhaps my Mr. Right doesn’t exist for me out there.” She looked up and smiled, forcefully. “And even if he does, I don’t want to take any chances, I want to guard my heart and make sure I don’t end up like my mother, because I can’t handle it if that happens.”

Amara couldn’t blame Melanie for feeling that way, after all, when you grew up in a household where abuse and infidelity ran rampant, it was hard not to feel scared.

“You understand me, right, Mara?”

Amara briefly thought about all the things she had endured in her marriage to Tobias.

The neglect from him, the abuse from his mother and sister which left wounds and scar that ran fresh on the skin of her back, and the humiliation she had endured every single day while trying to make him love her.

“Of course,” Amara finally spoke, her voice barely a whisper.

“But,” She continued. “You shouldn’t give up on hope so soon. After all, the world is a big place. Who knows, you could find happiness in the next corner.”

Melanie leaned into Amara touch and shook her head, chuckling. “It doesn’t work like that. Our world isn’t some teen romance story and I’m definitely not the female lead, nor the side character that ends up with the second male lead after the female lead dumps him, so please,” Pausing, she opened her eyes and the desperation in them reminded Amara of how broken Melanie was last year when her fiancé cheated on her and took nearly half of her fortune. “Can we not talk about this any further?”
