Under the pretense of "making time for Lily during lunch break", it was just an attempt to let her have some dignity.
Determined to settle the divorce today, Lily didn't call him out on the excuse.
Xavier sat back in his chair in the CEO's office. He wore a white shirt, looking perfectly at ease as he napped.
When the door opened, he lazily lifted his eyes and glanced at her. "Take an hour off this afternoon and pick up the divorce certificate at the court."
With only an hour left before working hours officially resumed, the court was just re-opening for the afternoon. She could go, finish the formalities, and be back in under an hour.
Lily had planned it perfectly. She didn't waste time with small talk, trying to save Xavier as much time as possible.
But as soon as she spoke, the mood in the office shifted. Despite the heating being set on high, the room felt colder than the winter chill outside.
Timothy, sensing the tension, excused himself. "Mr. Fulton, Mrs. Fulton, I have some matters to attend to."
As he left, the atmosphere grew even colder. The couple, who should have been close, now stood as if separated by miles—distant and indifferent.
Xavier didn't flinch. "You interrupted my rest just to say that?"
So, the divorce mattered less than his rest? His usual detached attitude remained, and Lily felt her frustration rising. "I thought that, since you and Sarah made your relationship public, you were planning on getting a divorce.
"What's going on? Are you really going to let her continue living with the fake title of Mrs. Fulton?"
"What's the problem?" Xavier spread his arms, raising an eyebrow.
"She agrees, but I don't," Lily said, pressing her lips tight. "I'm not going to be your shield."
Xavier's looked at her coldly and smirked. "Do you even have the right to disagree?"
Xavier's gaze turned colder. "So, you two have hidden it so well that I didn't notice? He came back to the country on purpose and went through all those difficulties with the Devereux Group shareholders just to invest in the Avelon Designs Competition and protect you.
"Now, he's sending you to the international stage right under my nose. What's next?"
Lily had no idea about Terence's involvement in the Avelon Designs Competition or the difficulties with the Devereux Group shareholders.
Thinking about it, she realized the Devereux Group had no connection to the design industry—surely the shareholders would be upset about such an unexpected investment.
Could he be doing this… because of her?
"Terence is helping me because of Maryanne," she said firmly. She had to believe it. She convinced herself of it.
"As for me and Sarah, it's just a work relationship. We're only seen together because of that. It's the reporters who misreported everything. What's there for you to not accept?"
