Shannon's gaze remained fixed on the tortoise in Eva's hands, and her expression was complicated.
Scott and Clara rushed into the barrier to pull Eva out. They caught sight of Shannon's serious expression and grew tense.
"Shannon, is something wrong?"
"Shannon, is the Malignant System gone?"
They couldn't detect the system's presence and had to ask tentatively. But Shannon solemnly shook her head and raised her hand to point at Eva.
Their hearts leaped, and they dared not breathe. Then, Shannon pointed to the tortoise in Eva's hands and announced in a strange tone, "It's in that tortoise."
Eva looked down in confusion and had no idea what Shannon was talking about.
But Scott and Clara instantly understood. Their eyes widened as they stared at the tortoise Eva was holding onto.
Scott swiftly slapped the tortoise out of her hands, while Clara scooped her up and retreated as she kicked the tortoise further away.
Eva had been about to cry when Scott smacked the tortoise away. But as she was picked up and saw the serious expressions on their faces, she felt puzzled and decided to hold off on crying for now.
Shannon watched them retreat smoothly. Without hesitation, she held the amulet up against the tortoise that was kicked to her feet and now lay helplessly on its back. Its limbs flailed as it struggled.
The system soon disclosed a secret. Shannon's eyes darkened at hearing that, and she glanced at Clara, who stood outside the barrier holding Eva.
After a long pause, she withdrew the amulet from the tortoise. And even so, the tortoise remained belly-up.
The system heaved a sigh of relief in the tortoise. Excellent. Shannon had bought its story. It could maintain this last trace of energy as long as she believed it.
Though it wasn't powerful for now, its strength would surely return with time through gathered fortune. Being bound to a tortoise wasn't an issue as it could easily switch to a new host once it regained some energy.
As the system plotted, Shannon suddenly bent over to flip the tortoise up. She quickly drew a talisman in the void, and it soon stuck to the tortoise. Its sigils seeped into the shell.
